Ira Kaplan

In this video, we can see Ira playing with a Candy Apple Red Jazzmaster, one of Ira Kaplan's main guitars along with his natural finish Fender Stratocaster.

Ira Kaplan's main guitar over the years is this natural finish '60s Fender Stratocaster.

In an interiew for Epiphone, Kaplan says :

"I used the Casino for slide guitar. It was tuned to open E. James (McNew, Yo La Tengo’s bassist) played guitar on the last song and we tuned the Casino back to standard tuning. It came from my friend Bruce Bennett, who I play with in the A-Bones. He said: ‘Well if you want the authentic John Lennon guitar sound for slide…’ So I said, ‘ok, that would be something fun to try.’"

In this 1997 picture, we can see Ira Kaplan playing a Sunburst Fender Jaguar. In the background can see two Stratocasters, one appears to be his natural finish 60's Strat.

During the European Tour 2023, Ira Kaplan played a Fender American Pro Telecaster with a Rosewood Fingerboard in 3-Color Sunburst, as seen in a user-uploaded photo.

In the KDHX video "Yo La Tengo live at Mississippi Nights 3/2/88," Ira Kaplan is seen playing a Fender Performer after the strings on his Stratocaster break.

Ira can be seen going full freakout mode on this SG throughout this video.
