Leo Wyndham's Gear
In this video titled Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his gear, starting with his guitars. His primary electric guitar is a Mexican made Fender Telecaster Deluxe in a black finish:
...first up we have my main guitar which is my Fender Telecaster Deluxe, this lovely Mexican guitar with custom pickups called Brass Monkeys they're called. I wanted to get sort of like have a Tele sound but have a slightly beefier uh tougher sort of tone, so I know this guy who gave me these custom pickups which give it a slightly punchier more rounded tone. You'll see that my guitar is not in the greatest shape. It's been through the wars and I've sort of stripped it down and repainted it a thousand times and now it's, yeah Tommy's had to do quite a lot of work on this. I use Power Slinkies which is 11 to 48. I pretty much am always with this guitar on the neck pickup, I never I tried to avoid that sort of scratchier thinner tone and have a sort of more rounded ... but yeah so 11 to 48 um that's pretty much the string I'm always using. These guys I'm always, yeah the tone's totally up, volume all the way up. But sometimes I do some volume control in certain parts of songs with this guy, we have a new song called When Everything Was Lost where I do a lot of sort of like volume control throughout the throughout the song. I've had this probably for like nine years this guitar, it's like the guitar that was on our first ever recordings. For some reason there's a sticker of a horse in the back. I don't know why that is and some other weird doodles...
In this video titled Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his gear, starting with his guitars. His second electric guitar is a Fender Telecaster Custom:
...this is my other guitar, this is my Custom Telecaster. It's nothing special this guitar really it's pretty... in a way it's kind of special it's got some nice tape on it. I haven't done anything with the pickups it's just the sort of standard ones. This one has a sort of brighter sound it doesn't have the same pickups as that one so it has a slightly like higher register. I don't like playing this one quite as much if I'm honest. But I need it because we use lots of different tunings and poor Tommy's that has to, I mean every single song we're like changing tunings. So every song we're basically changing, Tommy's over here like you know 'speed of sound' doing the tunings freaking out occasionally. So yeah that's that.
Around 1:15 into this video, Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham says he strings up his Fender Telecaster Deluxe (and presumably his other guitar, Fender Tele Custom) with Ernie Ball Power Slinky, 11-48 strings.
In this video titled Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard starting at 4:44, which includes his T-Rex Mudhoney II Twin-channel Distortion Pedal:
I have this is a new thing it's called a Mud Honey 2 for a heavy chunky distortion sound I use that on a song Gravity and Fade which are the sort of rockier numbers
In this video titled Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 5:09 he shows his Korg Pitchblack tuner pedal.
In this video titled Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 5:11 he shows his Mooer Pure Boost, which he says gives him an additional boost to the one provided by the Mud Honey II distortion pedal which he also uses.
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 5:18 he talks about his Mr. Black Supermoon reverb pedal:
this is a very special thing which I actually bought years ago but I've never used until now. It's called the Super Moon by Mr Black and it's this crazy reverb atmospheric sort of spacey thing which I'm using on lots of our newer songs, and it's just unbelievable what you can do with this so I recommend that to everybody...
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 5:41, he talks about his Strymon Timeline delay pedal:
I also have the Timeline, similar to Rupert, for all my delay sounds. This is on lots of the different patches. It has a crazy amount of delays and things you can do with it. Yeah, so we can switch to different delay sounds...
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 6:03, he talks about his Strymon BlueSky reverb pedal:
This is the Strymon BlueSky, which I have as my standard reverb. It's on every song...
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 6:11, he talks about his DigiTech DL8 delay pedal:
This is very special - the DL8 DigiTech. I don’t use this for one song, but it’s very important for a song called Heaven Up There. The beginning has a reverse delay effect, and no other reverse delay, even this thing [gestures to Strymon TimeLine pedal], makes as good a sound as this. Weirdly, it’s just perfect sound - ice cold.
We had one of these on tour once, and we played in Paris. The band before us - a girl threw up all over my pedalboard while she was singing and broke this. True story. The next day, we were playing our big London show, and you can't find these anywhere. I had to buy one from a guitarist from Razorlight, who was the only person who had one. This one hasn’t been puked on yet!
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 7:16, he talks about his Boss TR-2 tremolo pedal, which he says he uses on "some of the more folky songs."
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham takes us through his pedalboard. At 7:22, he talks about his Gamechanger Audio Plus Pedal:
This is awesome. It's like a piano sustain pedal, almost. The Audio Plus is just amazing for creating sustain notes and things like that...
In the video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo Wyndham and his guitar tech discuss his use of the Fender Deluxe Reverb combo amp (seemingly a temporary replacement for his usual Fender Twin Reverb combo amp):
So here we have my amp, usually I use the Twin Reverb that's my sort of go-to amp because you can get a very nice sort of clean tone like that's bigger - it's physically bigger, literally um it's important, it's an ego thing, I like to have a bigger amp just to make my head inflate a bit more. But we were having some problems with the Twins so I've decided to go with the Deluxe for now, but now we're having problems with the Deluxe. [laughs] It's a good sounding tone for our music, just they both have nice clean-ish tones - the Twin more so - and it's what we've always gone with these amps the Deluxe and the Twin. I haven't tried that many amps to be honest.
Leo and his tech talk about the amp's Treble knob is always rolled back (about 3), Bass is turned up to 7, and how you can "dime" the bass out on the Fender Deluxe Reverb and it still sounds good. The Reverb knob is set to 3, which combines with the reverb coming from Leo's Strymon blueSky pedal. They also talk about the volume, 4 being "pretty maxed out" and how it doesn't get real crunchy, still stays clean.
10:35 into this video Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo's guitar tech talks about the Audio-Technica AE2500 mic used to mic up Leo's Fender Deluxe Reverb combo amp:
Um, microphone, Audio-Technica. It's got a condenser and a dynamic built in. So it's sending two lines, two separate mics in one capsule. I think that's super cool. They're killer guitar cab mics. So we can blend in a little condenser, a little '57' kind of sound. Basically two mics on each cabinet in one body. They're fantastic. It's really great.
At 11:05 into Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460 Leo and his tech discuss his use of his vocal mic when singing with Palace, the DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone:
So this is a DPA, our sound engineer he brought these along. And it just works very well with my voice. They're brand new, really really nice. It's a nice mic, I enjoy singing into that.
His tech adds that it's a condenser mic and has a really tight pattern, and that it sounds amazing.
At 11:34 into this video, Palace's Leo Wyndham - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 460, Leo mentions that he uses Dunlop Nylon Standard 0.60mm Guitar Picks.
...And then picks, I use Jim Dunlop .60s. I used to use .73s, and then this tour I sort of find that with these you have a bit more control... I find with these if it's a little lighter gauge you can just strum through more and play the more picky parts, I find with the harder ones when I'm playing a more strummy rhythmic part I just get a bit stuck sometimes. So usually it's the 60s...
In this Instagram post, Leo Wyndham of Palace mentions Fender hooking them up with a Fender Player II Mustang and Fender Player II Jaguar (the Mustang is black and being held by Leo, while the Jaguar is red and being held by bandmate Rupert Turner):
Thank you @fender for making two axe men very very happy. Player II Jaguar & Mustang now in the locker. Sounding real real nice 🎸. Can’t wait to get these onstage x #fender #guitars
Throughout this video Palace - mini concert (live @Great Wide Open), Leo Wyndham plays an Epiphone Masterbilt EF-500RA Acoustic Guitar. Leo's model has abalone binding and a Solid Spruce top. A good look at the guitar can be had at 8:44 into the video.
In this live performance of the song Live Well by Palace, Leo Wyndham can be seen playing a Fender PM-1 Limited Adirondack Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric guitar. The details can be seen throughout the video, but at 2:50 there is a nice closeup where the headstock and fretboard details can be seen, as well as the pickguard. The body shape matches a Dreadnought as well. The standard PM-1 has a subtly different design on he headstock.
