During this performance at the Colchester Institute, Newell is seen using a Roland EP880

From Martin himself:

In a multi-picture Instagram post beginning with the sentence, "This is where the Cleaners from Venus really began," Martin shows his Watkins Copicat in the second photo.

Newell: "This machine is a Sony TC630. It's what the Cleaners from Venus recorded our very Lo-Fi first album on. I managed to get one around about my 21st birthday (1974) with some savings and a bit of help from me mum. It did overdubs..but only in Mono. I taught myself most of what I know about how to make records on this machine. Here's a link to our version of the University Challenge theme music. Some smokeables may have been involved somewhere in this procedure (1980)"
