Lindsey Buckingham utilized a Sony TC-630 2-Track Reel-to-Reel Tape Deck, modifying its preamp section to create a fuzz unit. This custom device was repeatedly patched and rehoused in different enclosures from 1975 until it broke in 1980. A user-uploaded photo on Tumblr provides visual evidence of this setup.
Newell: "This machine is a Sony TC630. It's what the Cleaners from Venus recorded our very Lo-Fi first album on. I managed to get one around about my 21st birthday (1974) with some savings and a bit of help from me mum. It did overdubs..but only in Mono. I taught myself most of what I know about how to make records on this machine. Here's a link to our version of the University Challenge theme music. Some smokeables may have been involved somewhere in this procedure (1980)"
"I found a machine made by Sony called the TC-630, which came with its own set of speakers, and you ping-ponged from one side to the other. It also had a wonderful echo dial on it, and the compression you’d get going back and forth was interesting. It made you commit, because once you ping-ponged for real, you couldn’t go home again, and that was an interesting process for me.”
