Pat Smear

Pat played the famous Buck Owens guitar on an MTV unplugged show with Nirvana. The link has a great deal of history of the guitar.

During a recent Foo Fighters concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Pat Smear was seen playing a Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaway Burst/Flame. The Facebook post by The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion suggests that this guitar might be a rare Gibson Custom Shop Micro Kessel Prototype Iced Tea.

In midnight blue, his was US-made and had a maple fretboard. "We changed it to a black pickguard, with black Duncan JB in the bridge position and white covers on the stock neck and middle pickups—similar to Kurt's black 'Vandalism' Strat, but a blue/black color scheme." In a 2012 issue of Fender Magazine, Justin Norvell, vice president Of Marketing for Fender was interviewed to say, "On Foo Fighters’ 'Wasting Light', Pat Smear played baritone on nearly every track. You get an octave space between bass and guitar sometimes, and the way to fix that is with a baritone,” says Norvell. “Baritone guitars are a great studio/recording instrument, even if they’re not the focal point of the band."

In a 2011 interview with Nate Mendel for Bass Player, when mentioned that there are two bassists on the song, “I Should Have Known”, Mendel affirms, "Right. On the record, that’s [Nirvana’s] Krist Novoselic playing bass. Live, Pat plays his part on a double-neck Hagstrom, which is awesome. We’re playing pretty much the same part; I’m just adding some passing notes and following the drums a little, while Pat plays it straight."

For the Foo Fighters' MTV Awards performance in 2009, when they covered the Sex Pistols' 'God Save The Queen', Pat used an early version of the Eastwood Sidejack Baritone.

Pat is seen to be playing a Gibson SGS3

Around about 13 seconds in, the camera closes in on Pat and Chris and you can see clealry the guitar in Pats hands.

See 1:17:16 for the best shot. Given Pat Smear's extensive use of Hagstrom guitars for nearly his entire career, it makes sense that he'd use this Hagstrom.
