Paul McCartney's Effects Pedals
Filter by
Lying at Paul's feet, you can see the pedal that he used on Revolver and many times in the subsequent albums.
Despite occasionally using a Gary Hurst Tonebender for his lead guitar work with The Beatles, McCartney (somewhat remarkably) has limited his pedal usage to a relatively simple multi effects unit since the 1980s. Custom made by Pete Cornish, McCartney’s simple pedalboard contains a guitar/bass switch, distortion and chorus effects, as well as a mute switch and built in Boss TU-12 Chromatic Tuner.
In the Spanish Magazine „Guitarra total“, a subsidiary of the British one „Total Guitar“, number 93 from 2006, page 37, it is stated that Sir Paul used the Mesa V-twin pre-amp during the recording sessions of his 2005 album, produced by Nigel Goodrich, „Chaos and Creation in the Backyard“ . Unfortunately the article does not specify how the V-twin was used.
A Pinterest post features a photo of Paul McCartney with his bass, amp, and the original Gary Hurst Designs Tonebender MKI pedal, captioned "Paul McCartney with an original Gary Hurst Tonebender."

Paul McCartney is mentioned in the Hog Hill Mill Blog as using the Boss CE-3 Chorus pedal, highlighting its role in his effects setup.
In the Hog Hill Mill Blog post titled "Amplifiers & Pedals," Paul McCartney is mentioned as using the Dunlop Cry Baby GCB-95 wah pedal.

Paul McCartney's Peterson Strobe Tuner R450 is featured on his desk, as seen in the Hog Hill Mill Blog's "Amplifiers & Pedals" section.
Specified on Keith Smith's official Peterson artist page.
Keith Smith has been Paul McCartney's instrument technician since the 1980s and is the custodian of such iconic instruments as Paul's 1962 Hofner 500/1 bass played on so many Beatles, Wings & solo hit records and his 1964 Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar ("Yesterday" was recorded on it).
These most precious artefacts of classic rock music are tuned both live and in the studio with a Peterson tuner. Keith uses an AutoStrobe 590, and there are several long-serving Peterson Model 450 strobe tuners in the McCartney gear arsenal.
Paul McCartney uses a customized Pete Cornish SS-2 overdrive pedal in his rack setup, as listed on the Pete Cornish Client List.
"For the distorted sound on Slidin’ we reamped the DI signal. There’s a couple of different pedals on that. There’s the Little Big Trees which is by Audio Kitchen. It’s like a little 2.5-watt valve stompbox and it sounds amazing. Then I also put it through an Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro-Synth. So it’s just a mix of that and the clean signal. I think there might have been a bit of Decapitator going on too!”
the Boss CE-3 or CE-5 (Chorus) is listed in this blog
the Boss CS-3 (Compression Sustainer) is listed in this blog

“Hofner sent us some really weird, funky little pedals they made a little while ago. One of them is a little analogue delay called Time Again, which is quite cute. I’ve got an MXR Phase 90 - a genuine original one, that’s standing by. We’ve got a couple of other things, like a T.Rex tremolo but that’s about it.” Pete Cornish put it all together for us so it’s all nicely done, and all works nice.”
In this Reverb interview for McCartney III you can see it on his studio board.

Here we have a limited edition Time and Again pedal, also made by Hofner. It's an individually handmade all-analog delay that's an important part of Paul McCartney's current pedalboard.
