Phil Miller's Gear
In a performance captured in the video "Matching Mole on Rockenstock (7-1-1972)" by BassLudeman, Phil Miller can be seen playing a Gibson SG Special, with two P-90 pickups.
In Hatfield and the North's 1973 performance at Château d'Hérouville, an HH IC-100 combo amp can be seen next to Phil Miller. Various first hand sources (such as Triplanetary's reply on this forum thread: https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/seeking-a-fuzz-tone-like-phil-millers-hatfield-and-the-north.2081530/page-2) have confirmed that Phil would use the "Sustain" circuit on this amp, in conjunction with other fuzz pedals, to achieve his fuzzy lead tone.
In the 1979 footage of National Health performing "The Collapso," Phil Miller is seen playing a brown Gibson Les Paul, starting at 0:42 and throughout the performance. This is corroborated by the Canterbury scene wiki Calyx.fr, which notes that his red SG Special was stolen at a gig in March 1974. This footage is available on YouTube courtesy of Alex Malone's Prog Rock Essentials.
In a 1979 performance of "The Collapso" by National Health, featured on Alex Malone's Prog Rock Essentials, guitarist Phil Miller is seen using an Electro-Harmonix EH-3003 "Triangle" Big Muff Pi V1. The pedal is visible on the floor between a wah-wah and a volume pedal at the 1:24 mark.
In the video of Hatfield and the North's 1973 performance in France, at the 2:53 mark, guitarist Phil Miller can be seen using a Baldwin Burns Buzzaround fuzz box. This is identifiable by the unique enclosure style and the three knobs located on the far side of the pedal. The Buzzaround shares a similar circuit topology with the Tonebender MK. II.
