Sam Coomes

Happy birthday to this guy, the world's greatest Sam Coomes seen here back where Quasi began, the X-ray Cafe and the RMI Rock-si-chord. Keep on kicking ass Sam! We all love you!

The hinges and case on this instrument differ from other Rock-Si-Chords, and the legs do not match the typical RMI-style legs used on practically every other keyboard they produced. If this is in fact an RMI Rock-Si-Chord, it is likely that it has undergone some significant modifications over the years.

Sam can be seen playing a Red Mosrite Ventures Bass in this performance with Heatmiser in 1994.

Likely Sam Coomes most well known piece of equipment besides his keyboard rig, Sam has been photographed and filmed many times playing the Red Rickenbacker in his group Quasi, and while touring for Elliott Smith.

Sam used a Candy Apple Red Telecaster Deluxe for most of Quasi’s “Featuring Birds” Anniversary Tour. The guitar was bought after his Gibson SG’s neck broke near the beginning of the tour.

In this Instagram post, Sam can be seen with his SG. He brought it out for Quasi's 2024 "Featuring 'Birds'" tour, before it broke early on. Additionally, it appears in the music video for Quasi's "You Can Stay But You Gotta Go", off their 2013 album "Mole City". It's likely it was used on the studio recording of the album and potentially several others.

Sam Coomes can be seen using an Ampeg SVT-II bass amplifier during Elliott Smith's performance at Fuji Rock on July 28, 2000. The bass head can be seen behind Elliott Smith at 24:15, with Coomes plugged into it while playing bass.
