Scott Thunes' Gear
This pic is from the 1988 Frank Zappa tour and shows the original pickguard, since replaced with a metal one. It's completely stock except for that and some random screws.
The item can be seen at 46:50 in "Does Humor Belong in Music", a live Frank Zappa performance at the Pier in NYC from 1984. It was purchased from a friend at age 16 and was the bass he owned when he first auditioned with Frank in 1981. It currently has flatwound strings on it, to contrast with the roundwound sound of the Precision bass he owns.
Scott Thunes used a Carvin LB90 in the eighties and can be seen in an advertisement for the instrument.
Scott Thunes used a MusicMan StingRay 5 while working with Steve Vai in 1994.
When I worked with Steve Vai in Russia back in ’94, I borrowed a taxi yellow MusicMan Sting Ray 5-string.
Scott Thunes has used a Trace Elliot 600 watt amp while touring.
Scott Thunes played a Fender PBAC Bass when he appeared with Mother's Hips in 2014, as seen in this photo.
