Synyster Gates' Amplifiers
Synyster Gates' guitar tech, Za, talks about Syn's use of the Marshall JVM205H in this video at 1:30, saying, "Gates plays through a 50W Marshall JVM205H I like, it's pretty versatile. You can crank them and you can get a lot of gain out of them. Because they are using in-ears, they don't have to be super loud on stage."
In this video Syn is using a mesa boogie dual rectifier head.
Avenged Sevenfold All Excess DVD Synyster Gates shows his rig. Ideal for 'City of Evil' or the 'Avenged Sevefold' album tones as this amp can also be seen in the Avenged Sevenfold album making of as well as glimpses of it on in the Live in the LBC DVD.
Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates worked with Schecter to design the SYN100 Hellwin Stage 100 Guitar Amp. "We commissioned one of the best amp designers of all time to come in and do this," Gates says in this Guitar Center promo video at (0:20). "James Brown, who did the 5150 for EVH...just a really brilliant and unique guy." In addition to its outstanding dirty tones, the amp excels at clean sounds, and has two different voicings: the USA, a crisp, straightforward sound, and the fuller UK voicing, "I probably use this for the more rock type of stuff," Gates says at (1:03).
Though it has great clean signals, Gates wanted "great breakup, [and] great resonance," (1:30) so the Hellwin cabs are made with all birch wood, "fuckin' thick wood!" (1:38) Gates says. They also come equipped with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. "It cranks, it pushes air. It breaks up unbelievably, and it just has a great resonance to it," he said at (1:40).
The amp's distortion channels come supplied with a specially designed noise gate that keeps the amp quiet when not being played. "We dealt with this particular type of gate that's not this square thing where it just comes in and out," the guitarist said. "It's very forgiving and smooth and delicate, and it just pertains to the distortion channels." (2:00).
