Toro y Moi's Studio Equipment
The songs on Toro Y Moi's album "Anything in Return" were "...written with live performance in mind, augmented by a few tricks, such as sampling chords in the SP- 404SX and using its playback to stagger delivery on tracks including 'Rose Quartz.'"
Toro Y Moi's drums are processed through a EL8-X Distressor, followed by the Empirical Labs EL-7 FATSO Jr., and finally a GML 8200 EQ.
When Toro Y Moi did the entire recording of his album "Underneath The Pine" at his home studio, the sound card he used was the Focusrite Saffire PRO interface.
Speaking about the recording process for Toro Y Moi's album "Anything in Return," Different Fur Studios owner Patrick Brown says the drums often went through an Empirical Labs EL8-X Distressor, Empirical Labs EL-7 FATSO Jr., and GML 8200 EQ, "...to fatten them up, make them hit harder, make the kick really snap, and to add a little bit of softness and harmonic on the top end so they didn't sound too brittle out of Reason."
Different Fur Studios owner Patrick Brown says "We used [The Culture Vulture] to tuck distortions under certain things, making a heavier, darker low end to help piano float on top or vocals sit in the mid; it’s those harmonics that people are missing when they talk about analog tape or big consoles..."
To recreate the hardware chain used in recording Toro Y Moi's vocals, you would need an Avalon AD2022 preamp, a GML 8200 Equalizer, and the Retro Instruments Sta-Level compressor.
The last step in the chain to process Toro Y Moi's drum tracks is the GML 8200 Equalizer, used "for clean up, for subtraction, because it’s more detailed and sweeter than the [mixing] board."
One of the primary reverb units used on the recording of Toro Y Moi's "Anything in Return" album was the Lexicon PCM 42 Digital Delay Processor.
In this interview, Tro y Moi says that he used Boss BR900CD when he was in high school.
