Yngwie Malmsteen's Guitars

Yngwie Malmsteen shows us his signature Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster. According to Malmsteen, the guitar sports "YJM Fury Pickups by Seymour Duncan, and they're just amazing," he said at (0:55). "These really scream." The guitar has a "scalloped neck, of course, with the Dunlop frets, brass nut, standard tremelo" Malmsteen said.

Malmsteen's famous '72 Fender Stratocaster dubbed by fans as "Play Loud" due to a sticker the guitar once wore or "The Duck" due to its yellow finish and Donald Duck sticker on the Headstock, has come to be associated with Malmsteen as his go-to guitar rig. Malmsteen has used this guitar throughout his musical career and has had fender make several copies of it.

Malmsteen prefered the 70's headstocks because he claims they have more sustain. He also modified his Stratocaster by converting the neck from a 3-Bolt to a 4-Bolt (if needed) refretting the neck with Dunlop 6000 fretwire, installing Wilkinson Tremolo Springs adding a brass nut, removing the middle String Tree, installing DiMarzio HS3 Single Coil guitar pickups and most famously Scalloping the fretboard.

Fender honered Malmsteen by making a signature model based on this guitar.

In this article, Malmsteen states:

Looking fit, thinking clearly and seeming happier than ever, Yngwie appears to have greater control of the alcohol indulgences that sometimes got the best of him in the past. "I've realized that too much of anything is no good" he says. "Except too much guitars. I've got 30 in this house, and I have at least another 30 in storage. Since I'm always surrounded by them, it's hard to look at a guitar and not pick it up. "I seem to find good guitars in Sweden," he adds. "I have a lot of contacts with guitar dealers. The one I get are so expensive, most people wouldn't even consider buying them. If I see something I like, I'll say, 'Okay, I'll take that '61 Strat, please.' I still get 'em cheaper than most people would. "The last time I went to Sweden I bought an early-Sixties Gibson Les Paul Junior. I also bought a mid-Sixties Gibson Les Paul sunburst and a '66 dot-neck SG. Although Strats are always going to be my favorites, I like to noodle on different things."

Throughout this video, Yngwie Malmsteen is using an Ovation Acoustic/Electric guitar for a classical piece. He plays Tocata with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. The only thing I could not figure out is the Ovation has a classical acoustic headstock, as opposed to the sharp, circular headstocks most ovation currently have. This may be due to the earlier model Yngwie uses

Oh, I did get two new guitars during the tour. Steve gave me one of his signature models and I gave him one of mine. It’s great. Neal Schon gave us guitars, too. He gave me a beautiful white 67 Reissue Flying V and and it’s beautiful! He gave each of the other two guys a Les Paul. So go, Neal, go!

In this photo, Malmsteen can be seen with a Black Fender Strat with an H-S-S pickup configuration. No stranger to Stratocasters, it is odd to see the guitar equipped with a bridge Humbucker, knowing Malmsteen's preference to DiMarzio/Seymour Duncan Single-coils.

As well it should be noted that there are two small screw-holes in the pickguard next to the bridge pickup, this indicates that this guitar used to have a standard slanted Single-coil in the bridge, this suggests that Malmsteen or one of is guitar-techs installed the pickup rather than coming Humbucker equipped from the factory. This photo appears to be from the '80s so Malmsteen most likely would have been using DiMarzios at the time, however this is just speculation.
