Founded by Don Lace Sr. and his sons Don Jr. and Jeff in their family garage in Cypress, California, Lace Music Products is a pickup manufacturer known for pioneering noiseless single-coil technology. Don Lace Sr. developed the Lace Sensor pickup after encountering Fender's pickup manufacturing process in the late 1960s. His patented Radiant Field Barrier design — metal barriers surrounding the coil and magnets — reduces 60-cycle hum while producing a broader, more concentrated magnetic sensing field than traditional pickups. The first Lace Sensor debuted in 1985, and Fender used the pickups exclusively from 1987 to 1996 in models such as the Strat Plus, the Jeff Beck Stratocaster, the Eric Clapton Stratocaster, the Telecaster Plus, and the Stratocaster Ultra.
The original Lace Sensor line includes several tonal variants: the Gold emulates glassy 1950s single-coil tones, the Silver captures a beefy 1970s Stratocaster sound, the Blue approximates a warm P-90, and the Red delivers humbucker-level output. In 2007, Jeff Lace introduced the Alumitone, an aluminum-based pickup design that uses 90% less copper wire than conventional pickups while maintaining high output and low noise. The company also produces bass pickups, acoustic pickups, loaded pickguards, and cigar box guitars under the Teliki name.
Lace offers signature pickup models for artists spanning heavy rock and metal to blues and steel guitar, including Matt Pike (Sleep, High on Fire), Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher (Mastodon), Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly), Robert Randolph, and Nate Newton (Converge). All Lace pickups are hand-built to order in the USA.
