Best Guitar Combination on Two Guitarist Band

i was gonna mention amps but didnt get too wordy.

but my strat throght the fender custom shop deluxe i get to play for class sounds so much different than the other guys strat who is running through a vintage marshall head, not to mention just the difference between playing on the neck vs bridge pick up

Best SG Pickups?

i honestly like mini humbuckers in sg the best but for full size 61r and 61t are stellar pick ups

Best Guitar Combination on Two Guitarist Band

well the problem is its all player preference when it comes to getting a guitar. i can tell you the specs of a strat or a tele or an SG but that changes from model to model and isn't relevant if you don't have a reference on what types of electrics he likes.

i played sessions where there two strats and a tele, it sounded just as good as when i played my strat with a guy playing an epiphone sheraton. Milky Chance has had shows where both of them are playing guild starfire's. as long as both guitars arent playing in the same ranges ie; rythem should have a bit more bottom end and leads should have more mids and high. theres not really an issue of a guitar being "compatible" I've never heard someone ask about something like that, the guitars you listed are considered some of the most timeless and versatile guitars ever made, if there were specific models of each i could at least tell you quality and sound wise what to expect

the only answer is what you said you dont want and thats for him to go to a guitar shop and play the guitars that stand out to him, especially from a list like that. all of those guitars play sound and feel different, and theres so many models of each its hard to say yes or no to one or the other without knowing your budgets. if its 300 dollars my answer would be different then if it was 3000 or what kind of music you play

Forum Search box???

i was thining similar to jim like a search box on the forums tab

7yover 7 years ago

Forum Search box???

yea that would work, like i was wanting to find some info on gary clark jr and if i could search his name or a pedals name that would help take away the amount of duplicate topics

7yover 7 years ago

Forum Search box???

i couldnt find a thread to see if there was one to put this on but i was thinking it would help decrease clutter and make finding aswers faster, but is the possibility of searching the forums for certain relevant topics, ie something like a search box that looks for key/matching words. id imagine this has been asked before but the ability to go to the forum and search jack white instead of having to make a new thread like "ball and biscuet guitar tone" would be a nice addition

i get stuff like this takes time especially since this a site of enthusiasts doing it in spare time as a labor of love, just curious if the idea had been mentioned/played around with

Brent Hinds flying V guitar

id venture to say it may be a custom gibson, he has a lot of ties to the company and it looks like a gibson v but with his name on the headstock

Fender Player Series

also if you were to go the tele route you can now get a pao ferro neck under 800, used to be the cheapest were the baja and classic players now and for guitars, aesthetically i prefer rosewood and pao ferro fretboards on fenders and ive never really had a maple neck ive fallen in love with outside the 72 deluxes 12 inch neck

Fender Player Series

I havent personally played them so i cant speak to how they feel but listenig to a side by side the new strats pick ups sound better to my ear a bit fuller sound closer to the american pick ups and the guys from andertons said that for the budget they one of the best lines on the market, and that they embody fenders roots of an affordable guitar that can survive gigging and the tribuations of playing on the road

Chris Shiflett tele??

if i dont cave on a jazzmaster or sg thatll probably be the plan, i got promoted to management this summer and my loans have gone down so im going to chicago music exchange to look at jazzmasters and sg's since they have a good selection and get a drri or super sonic, living at home and making decent money is nice when your 21

8yalmost 8 years ago

Chris Shiflett tele??

i have putted the idea of building a warmoth tele deluxe with p90's, i actually saw foo fighters recently and he played a red custom one most the gig instead of his sig model

8yalmost 8 years ago

Chris Shiflett tele??

Ive been looking for a guitar with humbuckers as of late and the two front runners rn are the tele deluxe and sg specialt but the third im looking at is Chris Shiflett's sig but no shops near me have one

i like rosewood>maple, its pickups are supposed to be similar to gibsons and i like how it has standard size humbicker routes unlike the 72's wide ranges but how does it feel compared to a 72? hopefully ill be able to play one when im in chicago soon but jyst wondering what you gusy think of it

Advice for beginner on first electric guitar

as a beginner get the most comfortable guitar you can afford, and id say a stand, tuner(guitartuna app works just fine as a beginner) and stap and cable are the only things you need other than an amp, try a few out and go with what fits your personality and like said before look at guitarists you like and see what they use

Trying to learn how to play the guitar.

I hate to break this too you but unless her favorite song is teen spirit or smoke on the water its gonna be a while before you can play for her especially if you are just now starting. it took me about 2-2.5 years to become a competent guitarist and that was when i was able to sit in my room and practice and watch videos for 4-5 hours a sitting 5-6 days a week. Also, learn to play for yourself, if you are not entirely devorted to learning an instrument youll become frustrated and give it up. it takes a lot of dedication and time to learn any instrument, guitar may be easier and more accessible than many instruments like violin or piano but it takes time and money like anything else in life.

I hope this doesnt come off as rude or anything i by no means wish to offend you or turn you away from learning/this site, but thats the sad truth of music

is the Walrus Descent Reverb usable?

In terms of Walrus, the Julia and Deep Six are some of their best pedals, FYI.

you forgot th jupiter fuzz, imo best all around fuzz on the market

8yabout 8 years ago

Best Doom Sound?

doom as in doom metal? low treble setting on the amp is a good start lol, but then a fuzz(swollen pickle, fuzz of war, or blast furnace, something that has a lot of gain) into a british amp like an orange, or vox, maybe a new hughes and kettner, ive never played one but ive heard so much good stuff about them im also unfamiliar with ur amp so idk how those fuzzes would sound into it, and keep in mind i dont really play metal outside of black sabbath but this is what i think of when i hear doom metal.

as for a pedal that sounds like an orange i dont have a clue ive never really looked for one that emulates their sound

Upgrading from Oldie LTD, looking for a decent, less-than-$1000 new guitar. Suggestions?

are you looking for humbuckers, single coils, p90, semi hollow, etc and what music do you play, the most versatile guitar ever made imo is the hss strat and an american standard can be found used for under 1000, but versatile means different things to different people

Highly Suspect: What type of HSS Strat + mods does Johnny Stevens use?

Squier basses are a great bang for the buck id even throw the squier jag bass with the full size neck in the mix since its a pj similar to his bass and or a pj bass since he uses a pj http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier/Vintage-Modified-Precision-Bass-PJ.gc

as for amp the rumble is a good bedroom amp but id also look used for a rumble 40 if you can, its a bit bigger and with bass as most things in life bigger is better

8yabout 8 years ago

Highly Suspect: What type of HSS Strat + mods does Johnny Stevens use?

check guitar centers used, i got my strat for 325, and they have just about any thing to fit ur fancy

its black on black but this a prime example http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Fender/2008-FSR-Standard-Stratocaster-HSS-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar.gc or this for 400 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Fender/2004-Standard-Stratocaster-HSS-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar.gc

the Rocker32 is a great amp and also check out the bassbreaker 18/30, its a got an 18 watt and 30 watt channel, and with his amps you listed it might be worth a try, but wattage doesnt = volume, take a Hiwatt custom 50 and that thing will make will make a twin reverb(85 watts) look like a bitch. the Rocker32 is a gigging amp and will get really loud really quick most tube combo's are gonna get loud quick unless its a little practice amp, but its a solid amp and i definitely say if you can afford it get it. just make sure if you are in an apartment or have bitchy neighbors not to get carried away don't want any noise complaints.

id say try a few tube amps thats what ive done, try stuff you usually wouldnt like maybe blackstar or laney

also i looked up a video of them live, id say keep the hss strat stock, and a good tube amp like the orange with some drive and little reverb should get you close to his sound and i think the switch on his strat is a kill switch

8yabout 8 years ago

Highly Suspect: What type of HSS Strat + mods does Johnny Stevens use?

No problem, but a mexican hss strat is a good starting point and to get it similar to his id just try to find out what that switch he has is, pick ups in a mex strat are pretty good and will sound close to his as long as he isnt using a super hot bridge

8yabout 8 years ago

Highly Suspect: What type of HSS Strat + mods does Johnny Stevens use?

i can justify the 800 for a classic player i love them but i wont buy a mex standard new, 600 is way to much. good thing is they still run 300-400 used in good conditions

8yabout 8 years ago

Highly Suspect: What type of HSS Strat + mods does Johnny Stevens use?

a picture would be nice for future reference, but the one i saw is 100% not an original, professional or elite(or even standard) those are new lines and his looks old and beat to shit. more than likely its an older mexican or japanese he has modified since the one in pictures ive seen(aged white) has 21 frets, if you want a year id i have to have a clean picture of the serial number

as for pick ups the only way youll find out is to ask him lol, theres no sites with the info and with the black parts it's more than likely a set of aftermarket pick ups and aftermarket scratchplate maybe seymour duncan or dimarzio since thats what most people drop in strats. as for mods he has a toggle switch so it maybe a kill switch, but since i have no context ot could be anything the guy from bloc party has an 8 bit toy in his guitar

the pots i have no clue, he has one and it looks like a normal fender witch hat, and coil split is more of a preference so he may have it may not pretty hard to tell

honeslty unless he does a rig rundown/interview about his gear youll probably never know any of these for sure, other than the fact he has a humbucker in his guitar, and runs with no master volume knob

if you want something close to his, get a mexican hss strat, and start from there, but beware all these mods will DECREASE the value of the guitar, if you get a mex strat you are looking at 750-900 total investment if you have someone else install the parts, i saw you are in the chicago area, go to chicago music exchange(cme) and try out a bunch of hss strats, also if you go there go to their bass-ment, their shop is down there and you could aska tech how much the mods would cost, im just giving a ball park number based on what my local shop charges and what i know from talking to guys who work at CME.

First Amplifier

im seeing a lot of people by me getting the 20 watt fender mustangs(like i did) but more than 1/2 of the stuff at our local shop is fender or a company brand they control so i feel they have an incentive to push fender products

i love the ocd, when i got it, it was the perfect overdrive for what i needed it reallt cranks when you dial it in right and it ads so much oomph behind an already crunchy channel but the blues driver was cool but didnt seem as useful as the ts9 or ocd but i may go back and try it next to a ts9 and ts808, and if they have it a mosfet, but im def getting a chorus or some sort of modulation

also how would that quilter micro sound infront of a drri/blues jr

8yover 8 years ago

Recommendations

yea im def feeling a chorus and ill check out the blues driver again when i was looking at over drives i played that, the ocd and the ts 9 side by side and went with the ocd because i really liked how could go from a distorted rhythm on the low peak and flip it for a lead with some more bite on the high peak

8yover 8 years ago

Recommendations

ill definitly look into those pedals, might to an octive fuzz and chorus theyll add some more flavor to my rig beyond my drives, digi delay and nano grail and the mosfet has caught my eye while i was digging through cme today. and i agree, i love eqd and walrus but some of their stuff is out their(walrus isnt as bad) and if you arent playing stuff like explosions in the sky or god is an astronaut(two other groups ive been really getting into lately) they arent practical.

as for the hot rods its the deluxe more than the deville having issues, ive heard a lot of people say that theyve been touring or playing a local show/church and the amp will shit out due to cold joint solders, i know its an easy fix but idk about the ac15 now after seeing your assessment of it and that its a different circut from the ac30, but hopefully ill have the money for a drri or L20t, i put aside enough from my tax return to cover about a 1/4 of it and i have 1/2 of it saved up already so plans if i find one for 700-750 around end of next month ill buy it

im good amp wise for now, im running blues junior on loan from a friend until i get my drri, which will be soon here hopefully, im in a better financial situation compared to around christmas time when i initially planned to get one, a 1000 dollar school bill and car repairs add up pretty quick

also have you played the laney L20t its recently caught my eye as an alternative to the 65 drri (as a side note the ac15 has come on my radar as a more budget conscious choice but idk about it I've played them and liked it but i see so many people saying its hit and miss from model to model and year to year quality wise (similar to the hot rod series))

Just got a pretty nice sized tax return and am looking to get some new pedals, Im looking at going with a the strokes, cage the elephant, old arctic monkeys direction for my current rig since im doing a lot of rythem and lead my budget is sitting around 250-350

I'm not currently playing at church due to politics and etc typical life drama that i want nothing to do with so i abstained from it before getting dragged in. i am how ever in a 300 level guitar class(junior year college) so i can have a lot more fun and not have to worry about a clean ambient sound since our professor/instructor is an old school rock and blues guy and none of us want to play ambient type stuff when were together jamming outside of class

I don’t like the finish on my guitar!!

If you like how it plays id say keep it, and look for a used guitar on reverb or guitar center. but if your set on getting something new and need the money sell it. at the end of they day its what your comfortable with and your taste and i agree the asthetics of a guitar make a huge difference as to how much you like a guitar.

also if you like the les paul shape and feel check out the Matt Heafy and Lee Malia models

Fuzz pedals

if your between those id say muffelata, unless you can spend the money for an original green russian, but id say if ur dead set on a muff style fuzz check out the big muff op amp(ex- Smashing Pumpkins)

now my personal choice would be a Walrus Audio Jupiter (the v1 and v2 are both good) or a good second with the Wampler Velvet. I personally feel the jupiter is one of the most versatile fuzzes ever made and its stupidly easy to use and combines with other pedals well, my favorite combo is the jupiter with a julia chorus(i need to buy one already) but at the end of the day its your ears and your decision id say if you can go to a shop and try everything, you may find you like Fuzzrocious Blast Furncace or Death by Audio Fuzz War or Fuzz Factory, im not sure what the selection by you is like
