Audio Kitchen is a boutique amplifier and effects pedal manufacturer based in West London, England, founded in 2007 by Steve Crow as a sister brand to the pro-audio firm Mutronics. Crow, a former cameraman and recording engineer at Mute Records, developed a passion for circuit design after his brother reverse-engineered a Lovetone pedal for him. Audio Kitchen deliberately avoids copying established amp circuits, instead focusing on original, hand-built designs built around an ethos of simplicity and musical responsiveness.
The brand's lineup centers on compact, valve-driven amplifiers in pedal-format enclosures. The Little Chopper, Audio Kitchen's first design, gained early traction after producers Flood, Alan Moulder, and Cenzo Townshend ordered units upon hearing it. The Big Trees, an all-valve Class A 2.5-watt amp head housed in a pedalboard-friendly chassis, became the brand's flagship product. Other designs include the Small Trees (a single-tube ECC82 clean boost), the Fake Plastic Trees (a solid-state preamp inspired by the Big Trees' line output), the Flying Squirrel fuzz pedal, and the Big Chopper and Base Chopper amplifiers.
Audio Kitchen gear has been adopted by a wide range of professional musicians, including The Edge, Ed O'Brien of Radiohead, Peter Buck of R.E.M., Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, and Judah Bauer of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The brand maintains a direct-to-customer approach, with each unit hand-built in its West London workshop.
Audio Kitchen has 12 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Guitar Amplifier Heads, Guitar Amplifier Cabinets, and Overdrive Effects Pedals.
