Eccleshall Guitars is a British custom instrument workshop founded in 1971 by luthier Chris Eccleshall, who trained as a violin maker with W. E. Hill and Sons in London before turning to fretted instruments. Based in Devon, the shop built over 1,600 custom instruments to order, spanning acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins, mandolas, bouzoukis, and electric sitars. A standard line of solid-body electrics was also produced under the Electric Lady name, alongside original designs such as the Scimitar, Barracuda, and Excalibur bass.
Beyond custom building, Eccleshall worked as an authorised repairer for Martin, Gibson, and Guild, and received Mario Maccaferri's blessing to produce reproductions of the Selmer-Maccaferri jazz guitars. The workshop's reputation grew through high-profile repair and maintenance work, including rebuilding smashed guitars for Pete Townshend and serving as Rory Gallagher's guitar technician from 1971 to 1985, famously re-fretting Gallagher's battered Fender Stratocaster numerous times.
The brand's clientele drew from across British rock and folk, with instruments and repairs documented for Dave Davies, David Bowie, and members of The Cure, New Order, and Echo & the Bunnymen. Eccleshall is regarded as a pioneering figure among UK custom guitar makers, with a body of work rooted in traditional lutherie rather than factory production.
