SX is a guitar brand launched in 1998 by Team International Music Co., Ltd., a Taiwanese company that originally planned to use the name "Essex" before settling on the shortened SX. Production is handled at the Starsun Music factory in Guangzhou, China, and the brand's U.S. distribution has long been associated with Rondo Music in New Jersey. The lineup spans electric guitars, basses, acoustics, classical guitars, banjos, lap steels, and resonators, with a strong focus on traditional body shapes — Stratocaster-style, Telecaster-style, Les Paul-style, Jazz Bass-style, and Precision Bass-style copies — at entry-level price points.
SX is best known as a budget-friendly option for beginners and for players looking for an inexpensive platform to modify. Popular models have included the STL series (Telecaster-style), the Hawk series (Strat-style), the Furrian (thinline Tele-style), the Ursa bass series, and a range of small-body 1/2 and 3/4 scale starter acoustics and classicals aimed at younger students. In 2003 the company hired American luthier George Gorodnitski to design the higher-end GG series, a step up from the core catalog.
Within the enthusiast community — particularly on forums like TalkBass and Squier-Talk — SX instruments have a reputation as serviceable, affordable guitars and basses that respond well to aftermarket upgrades such as pickup and tuner swaps, making them a common choice for first instruments, project builds, and backup rigs.
SX Guitars has 94 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars, Electric Basses, and Acoustic-Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 18 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Funk / Soul, and Pop. Notable users include Joe Dart, Yvette Young, and Khruangbin. Most SX Guitars products sit on the budget-friendly end of the spectrum.
