Founded in 2009 by luthier Joe Knaggs and marketer Peter Wolf, Knaggs Guitars is a Maryland-based boutique guitar maker specializing in precision handcrafted electric guitars and basses. Joe Knaggs honed his craft over many years at Paul Reed Smith Guitars, where he rose from the finishing department to head the Private Stock division and designed models including the Mira, Starla, and Singlecut before departing to launch his own company. Knaggs Guitars employs a team of senior builders with over 150 years of combined experience.
The company's lineup is organized into several series. The Chesapeake Series — named after Maryland waterways — includes the double-cutaway Severn (offered in HSS and SSS configurations, plus baritone and seven-string variants), the T-style Choptank (available in solid and semi-hollow builds), and the Severn Bass. The Influence Series features the single-cut Kenai with its carved top and humbucking pickups, alongside the Keya and Chena models. A proprietary set-neck joint called the "Knaggs Influence" maximizes contact area between neck and body to enhance sustain and resonance. Most models are available in tiered build levels (T1, T2, T3) with increasing appointments, and all non-signature designs are named after Native American river names in North America.
Knaggs instruments are played by a wide roster of professional musicians, including Steve Stevens of Billy Idol, Grammy-winning guitarist Larry Mitchell, blues guitarist Eric Steckel, Billy Morrison, Chino Moreno, Pete Thorn, and Alessandro Venturella. The company also builds a small number of acoustic guitars each year alongside its electric catalog.
Knaggs has 13 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars and Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 8 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Blues, and Jazz. Notable users include Steve Stevens, Ben McLeod, and Chino Moreno.
