Founded by luthier Lloyd Baggs in the mid-1970s, L.R. Baggs is an acoustic amplification company headquartered in Nipomo, California. Baggs built his first guitar in a Berkeley garage and soon attracted commissions from artists like Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, and Janis Ian. After encountering the challenges of amplifying acoustic instruments in live and studio settings, Baggs shifted his focus from building guitars to designing pickups and electronics, releasing the LB-6 undersaddle pickup in 1980.
The company is best known for its acoustic guitar pickup systems, including the Anthem (which combines a proprietary TRU•MIC condenser microphone with an Element undersaddle pickup), the M1 humbucking soundhole pickup, the Lyric acoustic microphone, and the HiFi bridge plate system. L.R. Baggs also manufactures a line of acoustic preamps and DI boxes—the Venue DI, Para Acoustic DI, Session DI, and Voiceprint DI—as well as the AEG-1, the company's own acoustic-electric guitar designed by Lloyd Baggs. Their electronics are widely used as OEM components by major guitar manufacturers, including Taylor Guitars and Godin Guitars.
L.R. Baggs pickups and preamps are used by a wide range of acoustic artists spanning folk, country, rock, and bluegrass, including Brad Paisley, The Lumineers, Marcus King, Sturgill Simpson, Peter Frampton, Tyler Childers, Nickel Creek, Old Crow Medicine Show, Dierks Bentley, and Dermot Kennedy, among many others.
L.R. Baggs has 37 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Acoustic Guitar Pickups, Parts, and Compressor Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 90 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Folk, World, & Country, and Pop. Notable users include Dallas Green, Josh Turner, and Donavon Frankenreiter. L.R. Baggs's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
