Prescription Electronics is a boutique guitar effects pedal company based in Portland, Oregon, founded by Jack Brossart in 1993. The brand built its reputation on handmade, vintage-inspired fuzz and overdrive pedals that channel the raw, explosive tones of late-1960s rock — particularly the sounds associated with Jimi Hendrix, Yardbirds-era Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, and Peter Green. After operating from 1993 to 2014, the company relaunched under Brossart's direction, reissuing its classic lineup using the same through-hole components as the originals.
The company's flagship pedal, the Experience, is an elaborated Foxx Tone Machine derivative featuring independent Fuzz, Octave, and Swell footswitches — the Swell function altering signal attack to produce quasi-backwards guitar effects. The Yardbox is a fuzz/overdrive inspired by the Sola Sound Tone Bender, while the C.O.B. (Clean Octave Blend) offers an octave fuzz with a clean blend control. The lineup also includes the RX Overdriver, a sonic reproduction of the original Colorsound Overdriver, and the Vibe Unit.
Prescription Electronics pedals developed a cult following in the boutique pedal community during the 1990s and have been used by artists including Robert Quine, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Johnson, and Trent Reznor. Quine called the Yardbox his "all-time favorite fuzz," describing it as the sound he had been searching for for 30 years.
