In a Tweet response, Reeves explains the mod evolution of his Red Fernandes Dragonfly.

"The guitar pictured started out as a Dragonfly that came to me from Fernandes. Then I changed it over time. First I replaced the neck with one from a '67 Telecaster, refretted with my preferred jumbo frets and with Sperzel locking tuners added.

I replaced the middle pickup with a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage 60s style & replaced the Fernandes sustainer with a Sustainiac. The bridge pickup sounded good so I kept It. Also original are the Gotoh bridge, the non-Sustainiac wiring, and the "mother-of-pearl" pickguard.

Also over time, the red paint on the body chipped, revealing bits of the original turquoisey green. I'd asked Fernandes for a red instrument; they evidently repainted one to give me. I really like the chipped result, as the opposing color frequencies make each chip look 3D.

Other modifications: a kill switch hidden in the pickguard, and replacement knobs with tops that match the pickguard. This was a favored guitar from 1998/1999 (when I made Hours with David Bowie) through 2009 (when I started recording Reeves Gabrels & His Imaginary Friends)."

"Everybody thought I had tons of gear but all I had was a Digitech IPS33B, a smartshift effect that would take two expression pedals. It was before they made the Whammy pedal and the Space Station— all that same stuff was in that rack unit. If you think of that device as an apartment building, I knew what was in every single room, behind each couch. I was doing Whammy pedal stuff before you could get the Whammy pedal."

In this interview with GuitarModerne.com, Gabrels speaks fondly of his THR100H. "As far as amps, I have started using the Yamaha THR-100, which I stumbled on using one of their little practice models as a hotel room amp and MP3 player. When I posted a picture of my guitar and the amp in a hotel room in 2016, the guys from Yamaha called and said, 'You might want to check out this THR-100H amp.'

"I used it in Nashville one night, but I had my Reeves on stage as well in case it didn’t work out. After the show, all my friends who are tone snobs and tube snobs said, 'Your Reeves amp sounded great. What was that Yamaha thing up there for?' I said, 'Well, in fact, I was using the Yamaha.' So that convinced me my ears were right."
