Regal traces its origins to 1896, when Emil Wulschner founded a guitar and mandolin workshop in Indianapolis under the name Emil Wulschner & Son. After Lyon & Healy acquired the brand in 1904 and relocated production to Chicago, Regal grew into one of the largest American instrument manufacturers of the early twentieth century. The company became closely tied to the resonator guitar movement of the 1920s and 1930s, producing its own line of resonator instruments while also manufacturing bodies for National and Dobro. Regal resonators found their way into the hands of numerous Delta blues and country blues musicians during this era, contributing to the raw, metallic sound that defined the genre.
Original production ended in 1954, and the brand name passed through several owners before Saga Musical Instruments acquired it in 1987. Under Saga, Regal focuses exclusively on resophonic instruments, manufacturing them in Korea and distributing from San Francisco. The current lineup includes the RC series of metal-body guitars — such as the RC-1 Duolian in nickel-plated steel and the RC-51 tricone in nickel-plated brass — alongside the RD series of wood-body resonators, including the RD-40 roundneck and squareneck models with hand-spun cones and Regal's proprietary Power Reflex sound chamber system. The range also includes the RD-05, an unusual resophonic bass guitar designed for acoustic settings where projection is critical.
Regal has 20 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Resonators, Steel-string Acoustic Guitars, and Acoustic & Acoustic-Electric Basses. Their gear is featured by 18 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Folk, World, & Country, and Blues. Notable users include Billy Corgan, Gustavo Cerati, and Les Claypool.
