Founded in 1969 by brothers Raymond and Marvin Lubow in Los Angeles, Morley grew out of Tel-Ray Electronics, the siblings' television and radio repair business. After developing an electro-optical circuit that uses a light-dependent resistor and shutter system instead of a traditional potentiometer, they began producing effects pedals under the Morley name. This proprietary design eliminates the wear and noise associated with potentiometer-based pedals and remains a defining characteristic of the brand. The company is headquartered in Carpentersville, Illinois.
Morley is best known for its wah and volume pedals, with its switchless wah design — where stepping on the treadle engages the effect and stepping off bypasses it — becoming a hallmark feature. The Bad Horsie Wah, a Steve Vai signature model first released in 1996, stands as one of the most recognized wah pedals in rock and one of Morley's all-time best sellers. Other signature models include the Mark Tremonti Wah and the Cliff Burton Power Fuzz Wah, a modern take on the classic Tel-Ray Power Wah Fuzz (PWF) that the Metallica bassist famously used. The 20/20 series brings the brand's electro-optical technology into a compact format across wah, volume, and multi-function pedals.
Beyond artist signature lines, Morley produces a range of volume pedals, A/B switchers, and hum eliminators. The brand also manufactures Accutronics spring reverb units. Artists associated with Morley pedals over the decades include David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, George Lynch, and Steve Vai.
Morley has 130 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Wah Pedals, Volume Effects Pedals, and Switch Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 294 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Syu, Cliff Burton, and Steve Vai. Most Morley products fall in the mid-tier range — professional-grade without flagship pricing.
