Studio Electronics is an American analog synthesizer manufacturer founded in 1981 by Tim Caswell and Val St. Regis in Hollywood, California. The company began by rackmounting vintage instruments such as the Minimoog, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, and Oberheim OB-8, before moving into original designs. Their flagship SE-1, released in 1993, is a double-rack-space monophonic analog module known for a thick Moog-inspired voice and has been used by artists including Fatboy Slim and Dr. Dre.
The company's catalog spans rackmount polysynths like the Omega 8, SE-3X, SE-1X, and the CODE and CODE Luxe series, along with the desktop Boomstar line (4072, 5089, 8106, SEM, SE80) built around swappable classic filter topologies. Studio Electronics also produces Eurorack modules under the Tonestar and Boomstar Modular lines, and a range of Class A outboard audio gear including the Dragon and Fox.
In 2017 Studio Electronics partnered with Roland on the SE-02, a three-oscillator analog Boutique-format synthesizer that brought the company's discrete analog circuitry to a wider audience. The brand is generally regarded as a boutique builder focused on discrete analog voice architectures and classic filter emulations.
Studio Electronics has 29 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Synthesizers, Modular Synthesizers, and Sound Modules. Their gear is featured by 73 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Harry Gregson-Williams, Klaus Schulze, and Junkie XL.
