The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself 👋
hey, my name's mikey and I like punk, pop punk, and emo. :)
been playing for five years, love gear. I don't own much, but I'm fascinated by it.
some favorite artists are black flag, the buzzcocks, the descendents, the ramones, early green day, blink-182, mcr, and pretty much any other band.
cool cool, i'm a fender man through and through. primarily a bassist, learning guitar.
also i sing. i'm a tenor.

i'm listening to a Descendents performance from 1987 and wow.
Edit: Here's another one.

The Revstar was another plan. Fender has done their job on me, but I really liked the $150 Epi SG

that really does suck. i hope that was cathartic for you. i really have no words, being unmarried and never having lost someone exceedingly close to me when I was old enough to realize it.

no, i'm just sympathetic. i know it really doesnt ean anything coming from a stranger on the internet.

my town has TONS of hood-ish kids and places, and I personally am not from the rich area of town. so there are plenty of rich-as-fuck people. I am not rich-as-fuck, but i am not poor by any means, so...
9yover 9 years ago
wow, that's rough. i do live in a more fortunate area, so i really count myself as lucky that we have those opportunities. that said, there ARE full pat downs every once in a while.
9yover 9 years ago
thanks! :) i've actually recorded at the local high school in their recording studio.
9yover 9 years ago
that's cool. home recording is fun, and my band is looking for a cheaper studio to work on a new EP.

i think it's a bass thing. my guitarist takes ten takes and picks his favorite, my rhythm guitarist records a few bars and loops them himself. i just do my thing and then produce the entire record on an aging MacBook.

Green Day and Metalica's New Albums
yeah I do. I take quite a bit of inspiration from them in terms of riff writing.
9yover 9 years ago
XD yeah when I record it's pretty straightforward, I just go in there dry as a bone and do the whole thing in three takes.

... holy fucking shit i didn't think all gearheads were this hilarious

Green Day and Metalica's New Albums
Okay, imo there's different kinds of pop-punk.
There's:
-Good Charlotte Pop Punk
more pop than punk, most mainstream
-Green Day Pop Punk
reminiscent of the Buzzcocks, anything they've made in the 21st century is NOT this, lyrically similar to NOFX in that they're humorous, but different in that they're less political
-Blink-182 Pop Punk
closest instrumentally to punk, I'd best classify it as skate-punk
-Every Mislabeled Post-Hardcore Band That Tried to Sell Out to Teens Ever
super emo, fast drums that remind me very specifically of NOFX
-Indie Punk Influenced By The Buzzcocks That Is Really Catchy But Will Never Be Popular Because It Sounds Too Much Like Real Punk
the best variation imo fast, uncompromising, aggressive, gang vocals, introspective lyrics (so not lyrically punk)
And there you go. I think really that the Indie Punk variation is probably the closest variation of pop-punk to real punk, and I think that the undeniably worst version is the post-hardcore "punk" music.
Of course, real punk bands do still exist. NOFX, the Misfits, etc.

i dunno because it doesn't even resemble daphne to me. also, the mint green pickguard really doesn't go with anything except Olympic White.
9yover 9 years ago
yeah, tony is really good. i didn't even know about his fingers until i'd been listening to sabbath for 10 years.

UPDATE
Haven't tried it yet, but saw it in person. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE GET THE SONIC BLUE FINISH. It looks terrible. In my personal opinion the Olympic White looks best. The Sonic Blue doesn't even look like Fender Sonic Blue, it just looks whitish-blue and weird.

okay there's a couple of things i'd like to say.
Q: Why did the guitarist get arrested? A: He fingered A Minor.
- i'm a bassist, singer and the songwriter for my band, so I read every rock band instrument and the cello (because that was my first ever instrument)

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

How exactly would you want to recreate the tones made by Steve Sladkowski or Stefan Babcock on this song? Sounds like a DS1 job to me.

For me it really wasn't just the Epi, it was the LP shape. It felt uncomfortable on my leg and weighed almost as much as my already-way-too-heavy Ibanez full scale bass.
9yover 9 years ago
i also find that with some od, a short-scale can sound full-scale. idk. especially through a jazz bass pup.
9yover 9 years ago
yeah my Ibanez full scale has a weird dead spot at the ninth fret, I can't fix it, the guitar center techs couldn't fix it... dunno. just personal experience i guess. I like full scale basses a lot on tone alone, its the 1 to 3 frets that bother me.
