it was the screwdriver. the vocoder was unique and talented and uniquely talented.

no way i'm going to guitar center.
umm... again, it might be the pickup, because it's the volume knob that's damaged and i can't think of anything else.

Electric Guitar Songs in Grade 3
being a bastard, i'd pick the green day and play it like billie joe does, just to fuck with the he teacher.

The volume pot does crackle, but the GC tech told me it was just dust and to clear it out daily with a spray. The spray was $50 per tiny can, so I didn't buy it. I did use a cleaning cloth, and it stopped for a bit. Then it resumed and I can't stop it.
NOTE: it resumed BEFORE the knob cracked.

interesting. the lows were fine for quite some time.... i wonder if i had a fluke one. i want to put either an EMG into it, or if i can save more, a Seymour Duncan?

another great example:
great punk rock band uses a semi-hollow thinline tale with like three Thbe Screamers in a row, and also a solid American Standard tele with a Bigsby bridge.

The knob broke 'cause I dropped it, like an idiot. It's been doing this since... September? Last time I played it was three weeks ago. Stopped playing it regularly around Christmas. I dropped it... a year ago? year and a half?
EDIT: I had it checked then and the pot was fine.

no, i haven't wrecked it, and i got a new bass almost exclusively because of this issue, so it was going on when it was still my only bass.
9yover 9 years ago
you know what? i've fallen into that trap. totally. and i see what you mean. tons of genrebending acts are out there and i can see those lines eroding.

thanks again. you are so super helpful and i'll send you the soundcloud link as soon as we're done recording. :) your criticism has helped a lot!

ok, i'm gonna take him apart later.
by any chance, could it have to do with output jack?
9yover 9 years ago
battery bass from the 90s. single MM pickup. the volume knob works, but the plastic piece shattered years ago.

What's your basic studio setup?
here's how i record my band:
Instrument into pedals
Pedals into amp
Amp into mic
Mic into adapter
Adapter into MacBook
MacBook into GarageBand
GB into monitors
i'm too poor to afford better. i was rich growing up, but i'm poor.

yes and no. genres help so people see what kind of use those guitars/basses/equipment/bullshit get. thus, rock should be split into like rock, metal, punk, pop/rock, etc.

So, my 199-something SRX400 bass is having an issue, and I'm not sure whether it's just me needing to fuck with my amp EQ or what.
The top E string when played through the pickup is super loud, boomy, and distorted, and the other strings are quiet and tinny. Even though the action is perfect (except one dead spot) every note through the goddamn thing is buzzy.
What should I do? I might replace the pickups, but I won't trash the thing altogether. Me and Westley have been through a lot, I'm attached.
EDIT: Tried EQ. No bueno.

no, non sarcastic. i took all of my mom's couch pillows from her and lined the walls with them. ceiling is just low enough for a 6'5 dude to stand in. carpet floor with concrete underneath.
9yover 9 years ago
yeah, i think a better idea than an mim would be to get another squier, a p bass.

thanks a lot. we're recording in a basement we rented out.

again, you are definitely better off just using the OD and EQ on the amp with an octave pedal or volume pedal.
really wanna stay simple, though, just the amp should do you.
unless it's a p/j jazz bass you aren't hitting mike dirnt's tone with a j-bass. you'd need a p. trust me i have tried and tried to recreate every pop-punk, punk, garage rock bassist ever. for black keys shit, j-basses rock. cloud nothings too. but mike dirnt? that's p-bass shit.
9yover 9 years ago
that's a biggie. i recommend just using the od controls on the amp and the amp EQ, and a volume pedal and octave pedal.

i don't, bc my band is recording fight now and i don't have a (functioning) guitar.
9yover 9 years ago
yeah, true. i feel that. i was recording a guitar track yesterday and the producer said, "do me a favor. i know you're new to guitar but turn your fuckin gain down." i did and the recording is awesome.
9yover 9 years ago
This is a very very good point.
There's a time and place to blow people's faces off and it isn't the recording studio.

about to listen to it.
EDIT: the best song I've heard on your soundcloud.
EDIT EDIT: and after the last one you posted here i've been perusing it.

Hm. I like loud blasty type distortion, to a point. if it loses tone I'm no longer interested.

vox amps are literally some of my favorite amplifiers ever. they nail things from Elvis to Van Halen to Nirvana to Pixies. you can use the bass control for that, and a vox on high gain with reverb fully up is so so so amazing. it gets to the point where I won't put my usual DS-1 or RAT on it.
