Best P-Bass pickups. If you can't afford a Dingwall bass and want to make a P-Bass work for metal, GRAB THIS!

As a metal musician, I needed an all-arounder bass for studio recordings that's versatile for various genres. Unfortunately, Dingwall basses are extremely expensive and difficult to secure here in Canada - an NG2 Combustion Bass would cost you over 3 grand before taxes.

Instead, why not make something like a Fender P-Bass work for metal?

Enter the EMG PX. As part of the X-Series EMG pickups, this pickup carries a higher headroom, alongside a very consistent pick attack when you play the bass hard for metal. While it doesn't get you that Dingwall sound, it damn sure sounds great for metal. Running my bass through the MXR Bass Compressor and Darkglass ADAM that's loaded with Ownhammer Ampeg cab IR's is such a joy to play with.

Having said that, do make sure that you have a qualified tech route out the battery cavity for you when installing this pickup. While the Quik-Connects are convenient to use, it's far more reliable to hard-solder the pickups for a more stable connection. Oh, and if I were you guys, I'd definitely consider using an active preamp for this pickup, such as an EMG BTC Control - it will give you a far better control over your bass tone.

Overall, 10/10, highly recommended. Well done, EMG.

Shoutout to the folks at The Twelfth Fret guitar shop here in Toronto for helping me set up this pickup into my Player P-Bass. Those guys are awesome. If you guys are in Toronto, Canada and if you ever want your guitars and/or basses upgraded with different pickups, go see those guys - they made this dream pickup installation an opportunity.
