Review: Kala 20th Anniversary Tenors Show What the Company Does Best, Affordable Quality | Ukulele Magazine

ukulelemagazine.com

Kala’s 20th Anniversary tenor models land squarely in the sweet spot: handsome, well-built ukes that feel pricier than they are. The koa/mahogany version gets the bigger praise, with gorgeous wood, bell-like clarity, warm balance, and a comfort edge that genuinely improves long practice sessions. The spruce/quilted sapele model counters with bright, clear projection and a bit more volume. Playability is a standout on both—smooth fretboards, stable tuning, and an easy, “buttery” feel. Downsides are minor but real: the glossy finishes are fingerprint magnets, the spruce model’s gloss neck feels slightly less slick at first, and the koa has a touch less sustain. Still, the review treats these as special-occasion instruments that are more than wall candy—affordable, polished, and genuinely enjoyable to play.
