Description

In the world of bass instruments, the Kala Fretless U-Bass stands out as a compact powerhouse with a sound that defies its size. Crafted with exotic mahogany for the top, back, and sides, this U-Bass not only enchants the eyes with its unique, figured pattern but also delivers a deep, resonant tone that is reminiscent of an upright bass. The fretless walnut fingerboard enhances playability and offers a smooth, responsive experience for players who crave precision and fluidity in their performance.

The secret to the U-Bass's impressive sound lies in its innovative use of polyurethane strings. These strings are lightweight yet large in diameter, producing a rich, warm bass tone that can fill any room with ease. When amplified, the Shadow U-Bass NFX electronics ensure your sound remains clear and robust, whether you're practicing at home or performing on stage.

Functional beauty is built into every aspect of this instrument. A Graph Tech TUSQ nut and walnut bridge not only enhance the tone but also contribute to the U-Bass's striking appearance. The custom Hipshot Ultralite tuning machines keep your tuning stable, while the built-in tuner ensures you're always pitch-perfect, eliminating the need for additional gadgets.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Kala Fretless U-Bass.

Setup and maintenance

  • Talcum powder helps reduce string stickiness for smoother slides on the fretless Kala U-Bass.

    Source
  • The rubber strings on the Kala U-Bass may require trimming and reinstallation as they continue to stretch over time.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • A portable battery-powered amp, like the Blackstar, is recommended for outdoor play with a U-Bass due to its low acoustic volume.

    Source
  • Owners find the Kala U-Bass ideal for acoustic gigs but note it doesn't replicate the sound of a traditional electric bass, making it unique for genres like Americana and swing.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners note difficulty in achieving precise intonation on the G string above the 9th fret with the fretless U-Bass.

    Source
  • Some users prefer playing the U-Bass with a pick for better articulation, despite the initial inclination to use fingers due to the rubber strings.

    Source
  • Users experience a distinctive, warm tone that sits between an upright and electric bass, particularly suitable for round, warm bass tones in specific musical contexts.

    Source
  • The U-Bass is enjoyed for casual, portable use during activities like camping and road trips, adding value as a travel-friendly instrument.

    Source

Build quality

  • The shorter scale of the U-Bass can result in dicey intonation higher up the fretboard, particularly on fretless models.

    Source
  • Owners note that fretted Kala U-Basses can exhibit mild buzzing, while fretless models avoid this issue.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Fret lines on the fretless U-Bass assist with initial accuracy until players develop better ear-based intonation skills.

    Source
  • The U-Bass strings are often described as resembling "rubber" and do not bend easily, requiring players to slide or adapt their playing technique.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Switching from rubber to metal roundwound strings may require a different nut on the U-Bass, but results in playability similar to an electric bass.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to cheaper models like the Rondo (Hadean), the Kala U-Bass offers more accurate intonation, making it suitable for performance settings.

    Source
  • A comparison to Michael Kelly Sojourn Travel bass reveals that some players prefer the slightly larger size and playability of the Michael Kelly, though the U-Bass is appreciated for its form factor.

I use the shit out of those on hip-hop. You pull that out on dudes bumping 808s [Roland drum machines] and they go, “What the fuck is that little dude?” They love it. I’ve used it on Jonwayne stuff—this rapper I work with out of the Low End Theory crew. I used it with Domo Genesis. He’s one of the guys from Odd Future, but he’s solo now and I used that on his record
