Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ludwig SupraLite 14x6.5.

Comparisons

  • The Supralite's steel shell offers a different timbre compared to the aluminum Supraphonic, which has fewer overtones and is often more desirable for studio use.

    Source
  • Despite being more budget-friendly, the Supralite competes well with pricier snares, although some users might still prefer higher-end brands like Yamaha or Tama for steel shells.

    Source
  • Coated Studio-X with a power dot provides more slam and is easier to tune than Powerstroke 3 due to its unique muffling ring placement.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Supralite's initial throw mechanism had issues, but improvements have reportedly been made in newer versions.

    Source
  • The drum produces a "big Bonzo kind of sound" when using 42 strand wires, echoing John Bonham's iconic style.

    Source
  • Using 42 strand snare wires enhances the presence and dryness by muting the snare side head rather than the batter head.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Switching out the stock head on the Supralite can significantly improve its sound quality.

    Source
  • For a chunkier sound, Aquarian Modern Vintage Medium is recommended, while the Thin version offers increased sensitivity and dryness.

    Source

User experience

  • The Supralite may lose tuning more frequently, especially when tuned high, and its overtones might not suit every player's preference.

    Source
  • Extensive gigging shows the Supralite's durability, though it hasn't been tested in a studio setting by some users.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Adding 42 strand Gibraltar wires brings out a rich, natural damping effect, enhancing the snare's sound for hard rock.

    Source
  • The Evans Power Center Reverse Dot is preferred for adding durability and a focused attack to the Supralite's sound.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Supralite excels in hard rock, producing powerful rimshots, but might sound slightly brittle at lower volumes, making it less ideal for quieter genres.

    Source
  • The Genera HD Dry with vent holes is suggested for those seeking a more muted, controlled sound, ideal for pop/rock genres.

Greatest snare EVER.

I bought this snare at a guitar Center for my birthday. I got this snare along with a remo ambassador coated head, a remo ambassador hazy snare side head, and Evans snare wires. This combo is very versatile. With low tuning, it is very fat and imitates the tone of the snare on John mayors music. Medium tuning sounded like your average snare, and high tuning was very cracky and had a little bit of ring.

The best you can get for under 200.

Love my Supralite. It really is the best you can get for under 200. Tube lugs and 2.3mm rims. Gets that Bonham snare sound without costing you an arm and a your kick leg... ;) The heads that come with it are ok I changed mine out to a Remo hazy on the bottom and Remo Vintage Emperor on top...
