Founded in Constantinople in 1623 by Avedis Zildjian, an Armenian alchemist who discovered a proprietary alloy of copper, tin, and silver capable of producing rich musical tones without shattering, Zildjian is the oldest continuously operating musical instrument manufacturer in the world. The company name, granted by the Ottoman sultan, means "cymbal smith" in Armenian. The business relocated to the United States in 1929, when Avedis Zildjian III began manufacturing cymbals in Quincy, Massachusetts. The company is headquartered in Norwell, Massachusetts, and remains family-owned after more than four centuries.
Zildjian produces an extensive range of cymbals spanning beginner to professional lines. The flagship A Zildjian series, rooted in the original bright, cutting sound the company became known for, sits alongside the darker, more complex K Zildjian and K Constantinople lines favored by jazz drummers. Additional families include A Custom, K Custom, S Family, I Family, Planet Z, and the L80 Low Volume practice cymbals. The company also manufactures the ALCHEM-E line of electronic drum kits. Through its acquisition of Vic Firth and Balter Mallets, Zildjian also produces drumsticks, percussion mallets, and accessories, making it the largest cymbal and drumstick manufacturer in the world.
Zildjian's artist roster spans the history of modern drumming, from jazz pioneers Gene Krupa and Papa Jo Jones to influential players like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, and Vinnie Colaiuta. The brand gained massive mainstream visibility when Ringo Starr played Zildjian cymbals during the Beatles' landmark 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Zildjian has 987 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Crash Cymbals, Ride Cymbals, and Hi-hat Cymbals. Their gear is featured by 458 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include Josh Dun, Travis Barker, and Abe Cunningham. Zildjian's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
