Orange Amplification was founded in London in 1968 by Clifford Cooper, who began building amplifiers after suppliers refused to stock his West End instrument shop, citing his youth and countercultural image. The company quickly established itself through its "Pics Only" amplifier range of the early 1970s — named for their use of pictographic symbols rather than text on the control panels — which attracted major artists and helped define the brand's distinctive warm, harmonically rich sound.
After a period of reduced production through the late 1970s and 1980s, and a brief licensing arrangement with Gibson in the early 1990s, Cooper regained full control of the Orange name in 1997. The company relaunched with the AD Series amplifiers in 1998, followed by the Rockerverb series and the breakthrough Tiny Terror head in 2006 — an all-valve design in a compact chassis that became one of the brand's most recognized products. The Crush series of solid-state amplifiers extended Orange's reach into practice and home recording applications, while the brand's speaker cabinets and effects pedals rounded out a full product ecosystem.
Orange amplifiers have been used across a wide range of genres, from classic rock and blues to metal, punk, and jazz.
