Description
The Mapex Black Panther Shadow Snare Drum is a masterful blend of craftsmanship and innovation, offering drummers a unique sound profile that stands out in any mix. Crafted from a 7-ply hybrid shell of birch and walnut, this snare drum boasts a rich, deep, and dark tone that is both dramatic and expressive. Its ability to produce a visceral growl at lower tunings makes it a versatile addition to any drummer's arsenal. The 6.5 x 14-inch dimensions allow for an expansive tuning range, providing both punchy attacks and resonant depth.
Equipped with the innovative Sonic Saver hoops, the Black Panther Shadow offers a middle ground between triple-flange and die-cast hoops, ensuring a controlled, dry sound without sacrificing the drum's natural resonance. These hoops also minimize wear on sticks and maintain the integrity of the drum over time. The SONIClear bearing edges enhance the tuning range and maximize tonal clarity, while the extra-wide snare beds and cylinder-drive dual-adjustment throw off provide precision sensitivity and response.
The distinctive rosewood veneer adds a touch of elegance, making this snare drum not only a sonic powerhouse but also a visually appealing piece. Dry, dark and full
As someone that drums for a few bands with different levels (of which one of them plays quite a few bigger shows) I needed something to replace my beginner Maple snare. When I first played the Mapex BP I thought the hardware was amazing and as soon as I laid my eyes on this one I was sold. It was really dry, had great dynamics that didn't cap out but still had a really nice tone to it. The attack with tone combination was insane. The walnut EQ'd and darkened the sound a little and the birch gave so much more attack and presence than a Maple hybrid. I don't use it for jazz except with brushes, but its great for rock, pop, punk and metal. I do play funk with it, but it is once again not the most open snare. It's also really sensitive and easy to tune. I myself didn't like it tuned low and have it in a mid to high tuning, I couldn't get it to sound as fat as the other snares I have. But overall, one of the best snare drums I've ever played. Although it has to be up your alley.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
I use it with the Evans EC Reverse Dot Tune Up Kit (EC2 Reverse Dot Frost coating batter, Hazy 300 reso, Puresound Blaster 14/20 snares) and a M1 Snareweight. The M1 clears up the last bit of muddy overtones so it still has its great deep and dry tone.
