Critic Reviews

Spectrasonics Stylus RMX

soundonsound.com

Spectrasonics Stylus RMX is a powerhouse for groove creation, offering impressive tempo and pitch manipulation with a vast, flexible library. Its intuitive interface and Chaos Designer feature allow unique, improvisational beats, making it a standout tool for producers. However, its groove library leans towards 'urban' styles, which may not suit everyone, and the effects section isn't standalone. Despite these minor setbacks, its expandable nature and rich features make it a valuable upgrade for Stylus users, ensuring it will be a staple in many productions.

Fun and chaotic rhythm powerhouse

Ever boot something up and just have it be... fun? That's what Stylus is. It's pure joy encapsulated in a legitimately productive program - Stylus is as enjoyable to use as some of my favorite games. Runs like a dream off of my SSD, has hundreds if not thousands of awesome loops, and fantastic, rich drum kits that are GM mapped so you can easily pop em into a track. It's also 8-part multitimbral with 8 outputs, so you get lots of routing options in your DAW>

john_withers

Reportedly excellent but I didn't bond with it.

I tried to figure out the Stylus RMX after buying it with all its expansions and did use it extensively for a while but ultimately when I upgraded a computer I didn't move this program to the new one despite my love of Omnisphere and Trillium. And maybe someday I will give it another go but I was kinda waiting for Spectrasonic to upgrade it but hasn't happened. Some people swear by this groove program but so far not me.

"I have to single out Stylus RMX; it is the most powerful and most versatile instrument I have in my arsenal. It offers and unprecedented amount of control and creative options for rhythm arrangements, and it allows import of REX files, which means it can be customized to even play tonal loops with all the sound control of its main engine" (Page 62).

"Since I’ve been doing the e-drummer thing for thirty years, I’ve amassed a huge collection of beat boxes, samplers, Wave Drums, plus all the loops and samples, and even several over-priced boat anchors that each still manages to do one special thing that no other box will do. It’s amazing: As useful as the V-Drums, ddrums, BFDs, DFH, Battery, Stylus, and Drumagog all are, I will still at times use an old box like the SDSV or Synare–or even a real drum…that gets processed."

Stylus RMX was originally designed as an advanced RX2 loop player with tons of features. One section of stylus, the Chaos Designer was misused, causing audio to be scrambled and glitchy. The major part of chaos designer being misused was the Pattern Slider, which had a chance to randomize segments of loops. This is heard in stages 4-6 of his final project "Everywhere At The End Of Time"

"Right now I use the Stylus RMX for a lot of drums, but also any “cut up” type samples – guitars, anything to be cut up and sequenced in that fabulous format that he’s designed. Omnisphere is a big part of my sound as well as Trilian. Those three give a very solid background, a very flexible group of instruments."
