Founded in 1994 by synthesist Eric Persing and his wife Lorey, Spectrasonics is a Burbank, California-based developer of virtual instrument software plug-ins. Eric Persing served as Chief Sound Designer for Roland Corporation from the early 1980s, creating iconic sounds for synthesizers like the Roland D-50, before launching Spectrasonics with a series of pioneering sample libraries. The company's Distorted Reality series became one of the best-selling professional sample libraries of all time, and compilations like Symphony of Voices and Vocal Planet set benchmarks for vocal sampling.
In the early 2000s, Spectrasonics transitioned from sample libraries to software-based virtual instruments, releasing Atmosphere, Trilogy, and Stylus RMX — a loop-based groove instrument built on the company's proprietary S.A.G.E. (Spectrasonics Advanced Groove Engine) technology. The company went on to release Omnisphere, a flagship "Power Synth" driven by its STEAM Engine synthesis technology, which won a TEC Award for Best Musical Instrument Software. Omnisphere is notable for its Hardware Integration feature, which allows users to control the software from supported hardware synthesizers. Spectrasonics also produces Keyscape, a widely adopted keyboard instrument plug-in featuring one of the largest collections of acoustic and electric keyboard samples, and Trilian, a dedicated bass virtual instrument.
Spectrasonics' instruments are used extensively across music production, film scoring, and game audio, with the company's work appearing on thousands of major productions. The company is also involved in the development of the MIDI 2.0 specification.
Spectrasonics has 26 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Synth Plugins, Virtual Instrument, and Expansion Packs. Their gear is featured by 358 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include David Wise, Christopher Franke, and Lior Rosner.
