Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Yamaha G1.

Comparisons

  • The Yamaha G1 from the 1980s is noted to be brighter but can be adjusted; contrasts with the Steinway S which has a more traditional sound after refurbishment.

Setup and maintenance

  • Yamaha G1s from the 1980s often need action work and refinishing due to faded wood and bright sound, which can be adjusted by a technician.

    Source
  • It's recommended to budget a few hundred dollars for thorough regulation and voicing by a technician after purchase.

    Source
  • A registered piano technician can inspect a G1 pre-purchase, often for a fee similar to a tuning, which is crucial for assessing its true condition.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • A refurbished Steinway S can cost significantly more than a new Boston piano, leading some to advise considering newer models for better immediate value.

    Source
  • A Yamaha baby grand for $600 is often considered a steal, though low prices are sometimes due to the difficulty and cost of moving them.

    Source
  • A relatively recent Yamaha G1, if gently used and well-maintained, can justify a $3,000 price tag, but older or worn ones may not be worth it.

    Source

Build quality

  • The G1 is the smallest grand Yamaha made, often resulting in a tinny and harsh sound, which some say is less favorable than a quality upright.

    Source
  • The Yamaha G1 was manufactured between 1988-1994, so even the newest models are at least 26 years old, impacting potential wear and maintenance needs.

Yamaha G1 Grand Piano review & information | Mark Goodwin Pianos

markgoodwinpianos.co.uk

The Yamaha G1 grand piano offers a compact design ideal for smaller spaces, pairing affordability with quality craftsmanship. However, its shorter bass strings limit sound depth compared to larger models, which might disappoint those seeking richer tones. Being an older model, condition is crucial—inspections are highly recommended before purchasing. While the G1 is a solid choice for home use, serious musicians may find themselves yearning for the fuller sound of the G2 or G3 as their skills and space evolve. Overall, it’s a decent option if you’re on a budget, but don’t expect it to replace a concert-grade piano.
