meh

I wanted some hall reverb in a pedal to shake things up because I'd been using my pricneton's spring reverb all the time back then.... I got this and loved it for a week and then abandoned it. I have it to this day. I used it recently on a recording where I wanted the sound of reverb into an amp and not post-production verb. overall very bland though

a gainier od250

these are really hard to find. They sound great.... mean 80s rock distortion. Bright! Imagien a gain boosted OD250. Capable of randy Rhodes tones in front of a marshall... approximates the Edge's War tones in front of an AC30 top boost. Overall a very rusty and clangy distortion into a clean amp but with a whole other character into an amp that's about break up. tame by modern standards. Only things like it I can think of are the SD9 and of course the OD250. Kissing cousins. Shitty switch, minijack for power, ltos of drawbacks that would keep it off a pedalboard. This is true of all the old DOD effects. Even the ones with regular switches have the EHX type minijack if they even have a 9v input!

suck

I do not like the new stereo electric mistress... I do not like the new clone theory... I do not like what EHX is doing to their classic modulation pedals AT ALL. I can't give this thing away. I've sued it as a chorus on occasion on keyboards.

moogbadger

Yeah...I think they should have called it something else. It's nothing like the vintage Electric Mistress that true Gilmour/Andy Summers fans want. I just think it's a nice chorusy flanging thing, but it bears little relation to what old-timers would call a Mistress.

the best dano effect, period

the dano delay sounds really good, especially for slapback... Its just great. Probably digital but sounds nice and warm. I think the guy from no doubt turned me on to this thing. They can be had for very little money to this day. Switch looks shitty but its actually quite durable and very easy to tap on and off. Case is sturdy as all get out. Another quality 90s pedal.

this is a really strange sounding pedal

DOD's overdrive doesn't sound like a boss or Ibanez. It doesn't sound a lot like the OD250 either. The 2 knob distortion is closer. Another nice DOD design held back by their crappy switch.

not so good

I bought this in the 90s out of the sued bin at bob's rt13 music... its was like 25 bucks. I figured it was way cheaper the a dynacomp and had more controls so how could it be bad? Well its a noisy little beggar that doesn't have as much squash as most guitr comrpessors, that's how. Typical DOD crap switch. Not sure if mine even works now.

a tubescreamer by any other name

arion's verison of a tubescreamer.... just like a TS5 soundtank with a reliable switch. Wonderful little Japanese OD. Instant 80s dirt. junk build quality, yada yada blah blah blah

so bad its good

I think DOD invested a lot of money in this effect at the time and it went straight into the bargain bins. Its a very sterile delay effect. I'm not sure if its 16, 12 or 8 bit. I suspect its 16 bit but with a less than CD quality sampling rate. Sounds like nothing else I've ever owned and I have owned a lot of digital delays, especially studio units. Not worth selling because it has no monetary value these days. Its main selling point is up to 2 seconds of d-time. Unheard of in a lot of stomps even today. It has 'infinite' hold too, for whateve rtthat stuff is worth. I mean, who actually needs a full 2 seconds of delay that repeats for eternity without changing?

argh!

this has all the features you might want, various stereo mdoes, delay time knob.... but the chorus circuit sounds awfufor most guitar applications. Why didn't they just add features to the CE2? I will never know. It does a cold analog chorus sound that can be useful. Think of the Police's chorus+delay+clean marshall superlead tones. The DOD icebox chorus is a cheaper alternative for this sound. Very good for chorusing 80s synhesizers. Can make DX7 strings sound more lush.

not so great

this was the first octave effect of any kind I ever bought.... not used much. Tracks poorly. Only does the 1 octave. When you get it doing its thing it can sound quite good though. Worth having around I guess. Very cheap today. Shitty switch. Try before you buy.

not a mutron

I got obsessed with envelope fitlers as a teenager. I didn't even know what they did back then. This was the first one I got. It was like 40 bucks which was a lot of money for me to spend on an effect back then. Its no mutron but it does its own thing. I think its been reissued. Try this on clavinet samples to release your inner Stevie Wonder.

weirdest stomp ever.

this is a semi-parametric midrange with a fixed high and low shelf. The Q of the mid control is fixed so its really should just be called sweepable mid EQ and not aprametric. Fuck you ibanez and maxon. Can be used for all sorts of silliness. Excels at cocked wah tones. useful for some toneshapng after a fuzz pedal. Quieter and cleaner sound then the parametric EQ in the earlier series that contained the TS808. I had one of those at oen time but I sold it for a lot of money. I almost never use this pedal but its handy to have around I suppose.

an old analog chous

Mine was not working right last time I tried it, probably an easy fix. Nice warm chorus sound in the style of the CE2. Probably valuable because all the Ross effects have become quite collectible.

it was never a good delay/sampler and that's why I like it

Awful sound compared to a boss DD2 or DD3, but that's the fun part. These can be obtained for a few dollars usually. Worth it. Cheaper then a boss at the time.... cheaper then a cup of coffee today.

its a delay

serviceable analog delay. Junk switch. I never use this. I don't know when I got it or why I got it. Appears to be working.

magically delicius

this is not the whammy to have. It does the job if you want these effects. The DtoA conversion is atrocious and makes a sound all its own. The wah settings are really neat though. They don't sound right at all. And that's the charm... its like how lucky charms aren't REALLY marshmallows, you know?

EHX's CMOS distortion

they made one of these with a 21ax7 a few years back I think but the original used a CMOS inverter chip... like a gainier red llama.... very fuzzy. reminds me of a mesa mkIV in furriness. Probably valuable now. Very Noisey even for a CMOS device. I suspect that the AC/DC transformer inside is the source. I should try one of the recent nano series ones that run on 9vDC

C-MONSTUH!

I'm obsessed with CMOS dirt boxes.... I love how they use those CMOS ivnerter logic chips to make these multiple stage fuzzy beasts. Total punk rock reappropriation of an obsolete, non-audio part. They're a bit hissy and they definitely can sound bad but I collect all these little boxes when I find them cheap enough. Ibanez's take on it has the most controls but the worst tones in it. Just another weird old gadget in the drawer... very similar to Yamaha's CMOS distortion pedal of that era. I know I said the Ibanez had the worst tones in it but it also has some great tones, all the extra control and gain can shoot you in the foot though. its kinda great or terrible, nothing inbetween.

mylittleeye

So Jim, of all these little boxes you've collected so far, I'm curious which do you think has the 'best' tone? ...and have you reviewed it here on Equipboard?

jimmarchi1

its a tie between the red llama reissue and the discontinued catalinbread hyperpak, however these have less gain stages. If you want to get into extreme distortion fuzz turf the best is the catalinbread SCOD followed bythe Ibanez, I think the Ibanez sounds a little better than the Yamaha.... worst in my opinion is the EHX hot tubes which is particularly hissy and has the least 'tube' tone at higher gain settings... these things have a distinct character, grinding, tweedy dirt. The red llama is the Mike Campbell pedal, so if you wanna get some Mary Jane's Last Dance tones that's the one. Pair it with an AC30, tweed deluxe and/or a fender Princeton and boom.

fond memories

I have an earlier version with red lettering... it was the first effect I ever used. We had to do a song with wah wah guitar in jazz band when Iw as in jr high and this guy Jay who played electric bass lent me his wah/distortion. The distortion helped with the cheesy jazz fusion solo theyw anted me to do In the middle. The guy didn't ask for it abck for a while and I got realy attached to this thing. Its like an optical wah and volume with an mxr distortion+ after it. I eventually gave it abck. I bought an identical one when I was older but it never made me smile like that original one did in the 90s. Its got a sound though. Good to have around.

the original

I came late to digital delay. People were stoked about digital everything back then. This pedal still sounds good today. You know, not TOO hifi.... bright and crispy. I remember being in an indsutrial band with this guy who couldn't play the guitar at all but was a master of playing the DD2 if you know what I mean.
