Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Arion MTE-1 Tubulator.

Features and functionality

  • The Tubulator closely mimics the Tube Screamer, with a JRC4588D chip, creating a similar mid-hump but slightly less chewy tone.

    Source
  • The tone knob can become overly clangy when set past 2 or 3, affecting sound quality.

    Source
  • The Tubulator is noted for its noiseless operation, even when boosting mids on a Marshall SV20C, enhancing high-end frequencies without introducing harshness.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Works well as a boost, enhancing the gain channel on a Peavey Classic 30 by adding sparkle and high-end clarity.

    Source
  • Despite being used for guitar, it has been effectively applied to bass, although switch issues suggest potential for rehousing with true bypass.

    Source
  • The pedal excels in setups where a mid-focused boost is desired, particularly when paired with amps known for their midrange character, like the Marshall SV20C.

    Source
  • Frequently used as a dirty boost with the tone set low, the Tubulator complements players lacking a TS-style overdrive in their setup.

    Source

Build quality

  • Concerns exist about the mostly plastic build, raising questions about durability over time.

    Source
  • The pedal, when kept in mint condition with original packaging and protective foam, retains its value and functionality, surprising users with its durability despite concerns over its plastic construction.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to the Donner Blues Drive, the Tubulator offers more flexibility and is favored for low-gain applications.

    Source
  • Owners describe the Tubulator as a "bassier Tube Screamer" due to increased feedback resistor and input capacitor, adding grit and bass compared to traditional models.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the pedal's responsiveness to picking dynamics, highlighting its ability to maintain clarity and articulation during nuanced play.

    Source
  • Some owners appreciate the pedal's aesthetic, likening its design to retro electronics, which adds visual appeal to their pedalboards.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Initially available at around $15 new, the Tubulator was an affordable entry point for budget-conscious players seeking a TS-style overdrive.

Japanese Gem

Plastic copy of the classical TS9, built with the iconic JRC4558D chip. Beautiful tone, with just a little less undertone harmonics (barely unoticeable). For those who want a classic Drive tone, but can't afford the "brand cost".

jimmarchi1

a tubescreamer by any other name

arion's verison of a tubescreamer.... just like a TS5 soundtank with a reliable switch. Wonderful little Japanese OD. Instant 80s dirt. junk build quality, yada yada blah blah blah
