PROS

  • Unique tone, similar to SD-1 with more versatility

  • Exponential gain increase in the last 10% of the range

  • Offers good fuzz/distortion when cranked up

  • Provides warm overdrive with gain dialed back

  • Versatile, usable for different musical styles

CONS

  • Quality of switch considered subpar

  • Tone might not appeal to fans of Boss or Ibanez overdrives

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about DOD FX50B Overdrive Plus.

Features and functionality

  • The tone control on the DOD FX50B Overdrive Plus can behave more like an on/off switch rather than a gradual adjustment from 1-10, drastically affecting the sound.

    Source
  • The FX50B is described as a hybrid between a Tube Screamer and the DOD 250, lacking the midrange push and clean blend typical of a TS, aligning more with 250/D+ tones.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • On bass, the pedal can achieve a Steve Harris-style clank and grit with a significant volume boost, maintaining low end unless the tone and gain are maxed.

    Source
  • Maxing the gain with the tone dialed off results in a Big Muff-style fuzz with substantial low end, making it particularly effective in band mixes.

    Source

Build quality

  • The footswitches on this pedal are known to be fragile and can feel weak, though they still function properly according to some owners.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Later models have a 'boost' marker on the gain knob that earlier models lack, affecting the pedal's functionality and potential for tonal variety.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Requires a 3.5mm jack for power supply, which is less common than the typical barrel connection, necessitating specific adapters for use.

    Source
  • Some owners experience fluctuating output levels, potentially due to worn-out pots, solder joints, or capacitors, suggesting these vintage components may require maintenance.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Custom clones matching specific part values of "unicorn" FX50Bs are available, offering a solution for preserving unique pedal characteristics.

    Source

User experience

  • A user noted that using the 3.5mm power jack may result in less headroom compared to a 9V battery clip with an adapter, influencing power setup decisions.

LOVE IT

I have a middle years version of this and bought an earlier years version cause the pots were scratchy finally learned how to clean them and got my precious back. I love the OD this has.

this is a really strange sounding pedal

DOD's overdrive doesn't sound like a boss or Ibanez. It doesn't sound a lot like the OD250 either. The 2 knob distortion is closer. Another nice DOD design held back by their crappy switch.

O

Ok

Very gritty overdrive at high gain levels, but at lower gain levels it sounds ok.
