Posted in Guitarists & Bassists / Midwest emo and Math Rock Fans, how do some of you have such good tones?

Overdrive as a boost is the way to go. If I remember right, the way that tone's treated for math rock from what I've seen is to get as close as you can possibly get to distortion without actually distorting. That fine line leaves you with something that sounds loud and hard and ready to break up, but you really have to go hard at your guitar to let it distort at that point. I like to quote the opening riff of They Speak With Strange Accents as the sort of tone I'd personally go for, but do experiment

Yo, long time no see, Jim.

Yeah, I just started delving into it the other day and it's really catching my attention. I'm seeing what album I can start with at the moment, but there's a recent release on Spotify by an artist named Papa Kotji. Album is "Macho Drom". There's something very hypnotic about the speed and rhythm in this style of music...

Perchance anyone here familiar with this genre? Found a passing interest in it and wanted to explore a bit further. I'm really enjoying it.

Posted in Guitarists & Bassists / Grill Cloth Replacement

Something just came up, guys. Orange PPC 1x12. Only problem is the grill cloth is messed up. Considering taking the time to repair this. So far, I've noticed replacing the cloth is a simple enough job, so I'm not too worried about that.

However, I did notice Orange does not sell grill replacements. After some search around, I found someone recommended a Marshall replacement grill in cane from Sour Mash. There's another on grill cloth on eBay. There's also Mojotone, but I've heard mixed reviews.

Wondering if any of you have a weigh on this.

Posted in Guitarists & Bassists / How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

If I were to replicate that sound, I hear no tremolo... and I am a trem guy. That just sounds like percussive playing, double stroking and punching through on accents. Pretty minimal overdrive at play just to get the treble brightness... all bridge p'ups. But no, no tremolo in that song.

It is percussive playing. I just meant tremolo as in tremolo picking.

its your vox now, I have a bunch of my own still, don't worry

Eh, it still feels really weird. Like, with the Martin, I'm so happy to have it, but it almost feels unreal that I actually own it. It's mine. Same with the Vox, you know?

Oh shit, did I ever tell you about how I got enough money to pay for all the shit I have?

Okay, story time. Last year when I was a slight bit more irresponsible then now, I got a job at a massive camping store. Essentially, I sold stuff at the flagship location. Unfortunately, the company was sold to a new one a few years prior and, following my employment, the company started to go under. Everyone was quitting, but I stayed until the end. I was working long hours every day and racking in so much money.

Then I spent it all on guitars and pedals and Jim's Vox amp and other shit. The company is dead.

you guys need to eat less than twice a day, sleep on the floor (2+ band members to a bedroom), own only 2 pairs of boxers and 2 or 3 pairs of fucked up, holey socks.... just pay your dues like the rest of us did. Stop whining. I've been homeless sleeping on aprk benches.

Alternatively, find a job as a barista for now. Get money, get free coffee, stay awake and jittery and practise.

Lose your job, become immune to caffeine, and use your funds wisely.

Get nitro cold brew. Copious amounts should make you hate yourself enough to practise guitar all day.

I have a friend who found an old Guild guitar and I thought it would be something authentic.

Nope. Bridge is all fucky. Pickups are dead. Dead frets everywhere. Can't repair because there's no truss rod. WAAAAAY too light. Feels like a toy or a hunk of wood.

Okay, review after a few hours.

It's a Martin 000-RS1. All sepele wood. Very trebly sound and surprisingly loud. Probably louder than the Yamaha but without the original bass response. It feels great to have a smaller body guitar. The original D shape used to feel a bit awkward, but a 000 feels just right. I haven't changed the strings yet, but they are phosphor bronzes from Martin, so I guess the sound probably won't change too much when I switch to D'addarios.

... Yeah, I'm not good at reviewing. But I like this guitar quite a bit, so there's that.

I was going to say that ypu meant "partial", but apparently impartial fair and just to to a disputant.

I mean, if you reword it a bit, impartial would work, but I think you meant partial. You prefer ebony since you're so used to it now.

Oh no, Oceans is the type of song that's sort of a musical palette to go ape-shit on. It's so much fun for those who like to improvise and do random shit. If anything, this is by far the driest performance I've heard. Playing this song with just a pianist and drummer at the forefront is the perfect way to shoot yourself in the knee.

Okay, let me explain something that I think might be the reason for this: Many P&W musicians preach humility when going on the stage. I think it's one of many great things that should be taught even to any musician in general. It's fun to go up and shred it out, but don't forget that you have an audience too.

For fuck's sake, yes, please.

sad hearing all these stories of people buying gear with the intention of it being played so low that it is barely heard, with sound guys complaining when it is.

THIS

Okay, let me explain something that I think might be the reason for this: Many P&W musicians preach humility when going on the stage. I think it's one of many great things that should be taught even to any musician in general. It's fun to go up and shred it out, but don't forget that you have an audience too.

That being said, I think my sound guy thinks he's the only audience.

Mar 30, 2017

Posted in Guitarists & Bassists / Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

Haha, my sound guy means well, but he can act like a complete ass when there's no reason to be. Anytime something goes wrong, he's pretty quick to blame someone and get angry before he has all the facts. Hell, he got pissed when someone put a case close to a rack monitor, saying it "broke the cables" or something like that. None of the cables are broken, though.

He's also really odd in mixing... He has the lead guitarist ridiculously loud and the rhythm guitarist almost dead quiet. Acoustic is usually sitting a bit small in the mix if it's a good day. What I'm amazed about is that he has the first piano at a good level and the second piano (usually strings) incredibly loud. So much so that it's annoying as hell when it's quiet. I swear, if I learn piano and I get placed as second piano, I plan on using the volume knob that keyboard has. Bass is always perfect, though. Super rumbly, very good. Everything else is good.

I'm pretty sure he hates everyone, though. Everyone in the band is slowly noticing this too, but we can't really do much.
