I managed to snag a Walrus Audio Voyager. So far, loving what I hear.

Amp recommendations!

I find my favourite has come to simply going louder. Set a Vox to the right amount of volume and gain, and you achieve the perfect metallic, low gain tone. Tossing in a low-gain Rat makes it much more touch-sensitive. The volume on the VHT Melo-Verb can further add some drive and I just love the aound from it. Hell, I think I might sit with the Deucetone for a long time.

Lol, I think the consensus is that Alan should get a Vox AC4. Get it modded, too! I hear the AC4TV mods make it sound so much better.

Amp recommendations!

I nearly bought myself a Laney Cub until Jim here sold me his old Vox AC4.

Here it is: The Laney Cub 12R. Is $400 considered affordable to you? You haven't really given us much to go off of. There's also the Vox AC4TV, or even the AC4C1 model which go for fairly cheap. If you want to cough up around $200 more, you can probably get the handwired version.

If, however, you want to shoot yourself in the knee, get a Line 6 Spider.

Guitar Recommendations (v2.0)

Well, today was pointless...

I went to Hollywood and I expected a wide array of guitars, but only found a few smaller bodies. I did find a Taylor with a Sitka spruce top, and that peaked my interedt a bit, but eh.

I have even more incentive to get that RS1, now. Maybe I'll try some where else another day.

Guitar Recommendations (v2.0)

Ironically, the Martin that I want at the shop has a missing endpin. There isn't even a cover, it's just a small hole!

I'll see if I can try some more guitars within the next few days. Thank you for you guys' advice.

Guitar Recommendations (v2.0)

Eh, what do you know, my first guitar, a Yamaha FX-335, broke the other day! Probably lasted 15 years or more. Bridge peeled off and really, there's no point in gluing it back. In fact, it already fell off. So I'm moving the pickup and preamp to my dad's old TAKA classical guitar just for the hell of it. I'll probably do a funeral thing in toss the damn thing in a bonfire when I get the chance.

Anyways, I need a new acoustic guitar! I'm already anxious as fuck without an acoustic on hand and I seriously don't want to keep randomly going to my local shop and annoying the owners whenever I go over to try guitars.

Anyways, here are the details: I have a budget topping $750. I'm going for a 000 rather than a D just because a 000 feels so much better in size (I wouldn't be against a 00 either) and, from what I've tested, sounds more to my liking. So far, I've narrowed my choices to two guitars within sight and am able to test:

  • Martin 000-RS1
  • Ibanez AVC6

I need to go to Hollywood to try out the Ibanez again, but I think I remember it feeling a bit clunkier, but I could be wrong. I tested the RS1 (sepele) against another Martin with a solid sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides, and it sounded a bit sharper. However, after A/B'ing the two, I noticed I liked the bassier sound of the sepele. Also, the sitka wood felt really weak,so I decided against that.

By the way, please excuse me, but guitar woods are not my strong suit.

If you want a reference sound, I really enjoyed the sound of Chris Carraba's Martin from when he demo'd it in a Rig Rundown. I just love that sharp, crisp sound.

I'm sort of not in a hurry because I'm probably going to make my purchase by next month rather than sooner. Have at it!

I do hope you felt better getting that off your chest. Had I decided to brew another batch of coffee, I would have said something earlier. Instead, I gave in at around 0255 or later, I think.

Eh, death is death.

Speaking of death, my heart's hurting. More coffee should help. By the way, I don't think we've met proper. Narcist. I don't recall seeing you dropping a bio in the new member thread, so how do you like to be referred to as?

CDs or Vinyl

Speaking of, here are my CD's that I left in my car! The clutch burnt out, so I need to invest in a new car, which is why I took them out. My favourite is Kveikur with F#A#(Infinity) in very close second.

EDIT: Well, shit, now I want to start buying vinyl. Aaaand the temptations have already begun...

CDs or Vinyl

This is a great metaphor. I suppose the daay I start getting into vinyl is when I'll already have some decent speakers. It'd be nice to have physical copies of the albums I love.

I think my first vinyl album will be The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place.

Ah, yes, Hutchinson Guitars. I found out about them a few years back. Always wanted their little Overdrive just because it looks so cool. That and one of those metal topped Les Pauls.

Sounds like a soundtrack for something, I can't quite place it.

Pretty good. Wasn't a fan of the shimmer tone, but that's just my opinion. Great work as always, Jim.

Sorry for the late reply. I just had a moment to test it out.

So, I put the amp on hot mode fairly loud, placed the tuner on output so it mutes, and the Deucetone in the middle. Both channels alone add a bit of treble and slight noise, but the worst offender is the clicking of the footswitch that's God awful loud. engaging both channels creates a massive amount of noise.

The OCD makes a surprisingly pleasant feedback. Kinda like the ocean from a distance. Odd. Anyways, combing the OCD with either channel on the Rat create a lot more noise.

Guitar alone. Nearly no noise with humbuckers on all positions, a slight hum added with coil tapping.

Guitar with Rat. My guitar seems to create an extra amount of disgusting hum, and coil tapping creates a very high whistle.

Part of it might be bad cables, though. I was planning on buying new ones later, but I think I'll have to do that sooner ( especially since I just got paid!!). EquipBoard did an article on cables and I thought the Planet Waves American Stage Cables seemed good enough. You have any recommendations?

My Deucetone Rat is making a surprising bit of noise! Two Rats is noise hell!! Anyways, I pulled the trigger on a Boss Noise Supressor for $40. It's a temporary solution. Waiting on it to ship.

Can't wait until I save up for more shrinking and upgrades :)

I've always wanted to do covers of songs from The Airborne Toxic Event, but I always find myself struggling. I should probably practise more.

I'll probably aim for The Graveyard Near the House. The strumming pattern conflicts with my singing, so i'll need to improve that. It's also a song I really love.

Well, that's certainly a revelation for me! I'll keep that in mind when looking for expression pedals.

Jim, how big was the VS pedal? It look really big and clunky from their website.

Problem with a Footswitch Build

I may have made several massive mistakes :/

So, a few months (or more) back, I started a build on a Boss FS-6 clone. Unfortunately, I had to stop and I only just recently remembered it. SO, restarted, and finished... sorta. Here's how it looks:

http://i.imgur.com/IBBF0jY.jpg

A bit tight, but it'll do. Here's a gutshot:

http://i.imgur.com/Yjje4eT.jpg

This is my first time soldering, so if it looks messy, please excuse me. I haven't purchased a stereo cable for it yet, but I was wondering if this is correct. I followed this image from the DIY build plans. The difference is I didn't connect the switches and went with a SPDT footswitch. Otherwise, everything is connected (or so I hope) as the build is. I'm just wondering if this is correct. Thanks!

A little vit late, there, but thank you nonetheless!

I actually fpund quite a few, all of which were ridiculously full of bells and whistles and other stuff and usually too big. Super Pulsar look promising, but it's just too much.

Actually, Keeley makes a version of this called the Dynatrem. Envelope tremolo as I need, bit of reverb, and great sounding tremolo. However, I'm also torn between the Hummingbird. It's basically an expression pedal versus envelope. Both are appealing. I might turn to the Hummingbird and expression pedal first and get the Dynatrem pater, but i'm not sure just yet.

Only five minutes? Huh.

I took a look around, but I can't find anything. That headstock is unfamiliar to me.

9yover 9 years ago

I'll have to check once I clock out later. If I find nothing, I'm thinking of just getting Earthquaker's tremolo and hooking up an expression pedal to it. That might be better.

Quick question for the pedal afficionados.

Does there exist a "touch-sensitive tremolo" such as one that can have a set rate like a standard tremolo, but ramps up the rate according to how hard you pick?
