Al Jardine's Gear
Jardine on his 60's gear:
"The problem is we kept losing them because we toured so much. They’d get stolen right off the back of the truck. We could never keep them in stock. We’d just have to get new ones, so I don’t have a clue where they are. So through the Sixties we’d just keep recycling them. I have a couple of replica Strats that play almost as good as the originals, or as the one I was playing in the Eighties, which is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think I’m gonna ask for it back so I can go out and play it. It’s nice to look at, but it should be played."
Al Jardine used a white Fender Jaguar guitar during some years alongside his Fender Stratocaster with The Beach Boys.
This concert photo shows Al playing a white Gibson SG Custom.
In this photo of the beach boys in the studio you can clearly see Alan using a Telecaster. I can't see the exact model or year but it's a Tele alright.
In this promotional photo you can clearly see Alan with a beautiful Hummingbird. Can't exactly say what model it is but the pickguard leaves no doubt on what it is.
Stolen by Charles Manson, as revealed in a Guitar World interview that was excerpted in this November 3, 2023 Guitar World article.
The Beach Boys co-founder Al Jardine has revealed that one of his prized Martin acoustic guitars was once stolen by cult leader Charles Manson.
Though Jardine failed to elaborate on the details of the theft, he nonetheless offered up the curio in the latest issue of Guitar World when asked about the guitars from his arsenal he’d save from a burning building.
To that, Jardine responded, “First it’d be my favorite electric, a Gibson 12-string – then my Martin acoustic, a 1976 D-45 Centennial model. Charles Manson actually stole one of my D-45s years ago and I never, ever got it back.”

Al Jardine stated in an interview with Guitar World, authored by Andrew Daly, that he had to learn and play the Fender Precision Bass after Brian Wilson moved away from playing bass in the early days.
