Billie Marten's Gear
In this interview, Billie says: "I’m very fortunate to own a 1958 acoustic Gibson; it’s rosewood and has the most beautiful worn-out but never thin quality to it. It really cuts through everything on record, and if I’m playing with the band, it definitely holds its own."
She uses this guitar in some of her live performances and recently played it in this cover: https://youtu.be/T5t7fm_YFx8
I couldn't find an accurate picture of this guitar from 1958 so the item's image is showing a 1963-1964 model
This was interesting for me. Very new, given that I couldn’t even figure out for a while how to play it on guitar all the way through. The main line, of two notes sliding, runs until the end, as thicker chords come in for the chorus. It’s done on producer Rich Cooper’s Tele, which was also used on Mice, through a little Vibro Champ mic’d up at his place. We also added that rhythmic acoustic which reminded me of Empire Of The Sun a little.
In this live performance Billie uses a Fender Telecaster Elite from 1983 in black finish with a maple neck. She also uses this guitar on tour.
You can see Billie is using this pedal tuner from Boss at 19:17 to tune her Farida acoustic guitar.
In this IGTV Billie is playing a Fender '72 Limited Edition Thinline Telecaster in Arctic White at 0:32.
Billie uses this Farida Electro Acoustic guitar (I think) in this video. She is playing "Vanilla Baby" at 19:27 with this guitar.
In this live acoustic performance of her song "Lionhearted", Billie is playing this Tanglewood parlour guitar in a vintage sunburst finish.
In this video at 0:30 Billie is playing "Cartoon People" with a Shubb Original C1 capo for steel string guitars made from brass. She also uses this capo on her acoustic guitar.
In this Youtube video, where Billie is performing her cover of “More Than This” by Roxy Music, you can see Billie is most likely using this Fishman Acoustic pickup on her Gibson J-45. At 0:38 the pickup is seen more clearly. Since the humbucker version of the pickup is very similar to this one, I’m assuming she uses the single coil version.
In this Youtube video, Billie can be seen playing a Martin D-35 acoustic guitar while performing “Pigeon” from her 2021 album Flora Fauna. Judging by the rounded tuning pegs and the worn out colour of the guitar top, it is probably a vintage Martin from 1970-1984. A L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup can also be seen mounted in the soundhole of the guitar. Either Billie is using a true vintage Martin or she’s playing a custom made or reimagined version of it. Finally, Billie has been seen playing this guitar live at some of her concerts.
In this recent Instagram post from Billie Marten, you can see she is playing the Gibson J-45 in a sunburst finish. Through the post’s link (https://www.instagram.com/p/Ct9gsFILpfS/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==), you can see more details of the guitar.
