Chris Poland's Gear
Poland used to play what seems to be a NJ Series BC Rich Bich back in his Megadeth days. The guitar is all black with the "Choose Deth" stickers above and below the pickups and a "Broken Bones" sticker below the bridge.
As standard for Megadeth until Chris Broderick entered the picture, the second guitarist always had the same brand of guitar as Mustaine did, and Poland was no exception.
Chris Poland is holding a Warlock in the following image.
In the 1980s, Chris Poland, along with his fellow Megadeth musicians, played a B.C. Rich Gunslinger Retro Electric Guitar, as evidenced by a user-uploaded photo.
At 2.55 in the video Chris says "I'm using this as my main compressor for clean compressed guitar sounds. The reason I like it is because it has a little bit of EQ in it so I can keep the top end a little bit uncompressed but get the mids and the bass so they don't go out of control."

Chris Poland endorses the 620, and can be seen in a print advertisement circa 2005 playing an HH 620.
"We also used Tascam DA38s to record with and it seemed like if I didn't put a fuzz box in front of everything, the guitar was digital sounding. So that worked out in kind of making it sound like there was tape involved. I think the fuzz kind of gave me that sound."
" I'm getting a little of that Band Of Gypsys thing. When I go to my bridge pickup, I'm getting that British-style Cream sort of sound. What really made a difference is that I stopped using power amps and Marshall cabinets. Now I'm using a pair of Yamaha's new DG100-212 100-watt 2x12 combos. They're the digital modeling series. I saw Holdsworth using one and I thought it sounded great. Yamaha gave me one to try and I really enjoyed it. One day I got this bright idea to plug one side of my rack into the return on the effects loop, and it sounded great. I got another amp and hooked up the left and right signals to each of the amps, and that's when everything changed for me. I should have been using open-backed style guitar amps all along because that's where my style is. I always had to fight a Marshall cabinet. There's something about the closed-back and it's not as "bouncy." To me, the open-back cabinet is way more vocal than the Marshall cabinets."
In a detailed gear overview video, Chris Poland and his manager discuss his equipment, noting that the Bogner Fish preamp was replaced by the Egnater IE4 Tube Preamp.
Chirs mentioned ( at 7.09 in the video) he used this amp for studio work as it's tube vs solid state which he feels is picked up by the microphones better when recording.. The specific model was mentioned in another video which has been deleted / removed.
In this video at 2:46 Chris shows the uncommon way how he uses his Shaker vibrato pedal to emulate the whammy bar.
In this video at 4:45 Chris shows his Deja Vibe.
An Ultimate Octave pedal can be seen on a photo uploaded to the gear section of Chris' website.
Sun Valley, CA (January 13, 2014) -- Schecter Guitar Research debuts the Chris Poland Signature Solo-6 FR Poltergeist for the 2015 Winter NAMM Show, which will be showcased in Schecter’s upstairs Room 210-D. The Poltergeist features a Mahogany body, a set 3-piece Set-Neck with Ultra Access, Ebony fingerboard, 24 X-Jumbo Frets, 24.625” scale length, and glow in the dark side dot inlays. It also includes the Schecter Exclusive Floyd Rose 1500 Series Bridge which features stainless steel parts, new push-in arm, and knife points that are re-tooled for better tuning and smoother tremolo play. The Chris Poland Signature Solo-6 FR Poltergeist also features Schecter’s own USA Pasadena Plus pick-ups that are hand-made in Schecter’s very own custom shop; which adds a slight upper-mid musical bump with just enough output to drive the front end of your amp. The Pasadena Plus pick-ups are suited for everything from Classic Rock to full blown metal … and it does indeed clean up in an 'Indie' sort of way when split.
"Then I have a Lexicon MPX1 effects processor, which I use for specialty pad sounds when I have a volume swell with all kinds of delays happening."
Chris says (at 1.28) he paid $85 for this in 2008. "It's a great harmoniser, I would compare it to an evantide harmoniser, it only does one thing though, but it tracks well. The harmonies are very articulate, it sounds really good. And for $85 you can't beat it!"
Also known as a Digitech IPS33 Pitch Shifter, Smart Shifter, Harmoniser.
In this video at 5:09 Chris mentions his "47 dollar fuzz from China".
In his interview with Vintage Guitar, he said "Mostly a Yamaha SBG Santana-style guitar with a Floyd tremolo. At the time, it had EMGs, and sounded great. I had my system set up for those pickups. But now I’m using Yamaha pickups, which are basically PAF copies." Furthermore he can be seen in several live videos with his group OHM playing an SBG style guitar with a tremolo, for example in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgrACYkXFqY performing OHM's "Peanut Buddha"
A Fulltone 69 can be seen in a photo uploaded to the gear section of Chris' website.
Chris Poland endorses the Yamaha MagicStomp, and made a preset for it.
According to the Yamaha website Chris Poland plays the Yamaha AES820.
" I had a Gibson 2x12 amp, but I have no idea what model it was. Well, that's what I was told it was anyway. But now that I think about it, it was probably some kind of wanna-be Gibson amp. But it was a tube amp though, which was great. I think it had 6V6s in it. I used to put it in the basement and run an Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 [Linear Power Booster] through it. I would just beat the piss out of it. I'd cover it with a blanket because it would be so loud that way my parents wouldn't freak out. It actually sounded good."
"For effects, I use an old Roland SRV2000 and three Yamaha D1500 delays."
"For effects, I use an old Roland SRV2000 and three Yamaha D1500 delays." In the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVGYgi97MfM&list=RDIVGYgi97MfM&start_radio=1) at 1.50 minutes in Chris says "I have a bunch of these Yamaha D1500s, this is a mono one which I use like an echoplex - where I have the dry signal and the wet sifnal at one time and I use that (D1500) as / just like an echoplex. I like that a lot!".
"I have ADA stereo tap delays as my main chorus, and a TC Electronic G-Force effects processor, which sounds really good, too."
"I had just gotten those Eminence Man O War speakers, and those speakers, a Roger Mayer fuzz, and a cranked Marshall power amp made that sound. It was that tone that made me play that way."
"Yeah, we had three 38s and one DA-78. It’s not that I prefer this gear but, with my budget, I wanted the cheapest format out there that people had made records on. They’re used as doorstops now. I got them for $200 apiece. I’m going to go with a computer- based setup in the future, though, because you just can’t edit on the Tascams the same way. We could have saved a lot of time by copying and pasting, although there’s a certain magic to getting a take from beginning to end."
Chris mentions early in this video (at 1.19) that he switches amps via Bob Bradshaws (Custom Audio Electronics) 4 X 4 and RS-10 Midi Foot Controller. At 3.13 in the video he again mentions the 4 X 4 - "It's just 4 loop and 4 on/off switches". Again at 5.06 Chris mentions his 2nd 4 X 4 - "I have another 4 X 4, because I use all the channels. I have 8 loops and 8 on/off switches. It works out great, there is no latency and the tones are really pure. It sounds good."
