Courtney Barnett's Guitars

Here, Courtney tells the story of how she got a friend to help her buy a Telecaster on eBay, because she was on tour and was afraid of messing up her Harmony Rocket. The same guitar was also mentioned in 2015 Premier Guitar interview.

Starting from 0:12 in this video, Courtney Barnett can be seen playing a Fender Jaguar on a KCRW studio session. The guitar was mentioned in 2015 Premier Guitar interview. The Jaguar Barnett has been seen with is, according to a Reddit discussion a 1966 Japanese reissue of Fender Jaguar.

Second Jaguar Barnett uses seems to be a 1999 (maybe 2004?) Japan-special Jaguar HH (JG-66). She explains the guitar in Musician's Friend interview:

I wanted a red guitar, because the album is red; I thought it would be a nice match. The second Jag I got was a Kurt Cobain Special, and I replicated that because I liked it. I played around with the Strat a little bit, but the Tele was a main one. [...]

Barnett also used Kurt Cobain's signature model during the recording of 2021 album "Things Take Time, Take Time".

Well, actually because of the circumstances, of Covid, I actually I ended up going to Sydney to record this album, from Melbourne, which is like 10-hour drive. We found this great studio up there, but all I had with me was my Maton acoustic guitar and the Kurt Cobain Jag. I didn't even have my pedals with me, either.

In a 2022 interview with Guitar Player, Barnett mentioned that this is the only electric guitar she used on "Things Take Time, Take Time".

There is a clear shot of Courtney playing a Harmony H59 at 1:41 in this video. The guitar was mentioned in the 2015 Premier Guitar interview.

I found it in this store just outside of Melbourne—I'm left-handed and it's hard to find guitars. It was the first nice guitar I bought myself. Before then I had an acoustic and a shitty old electric that I got when I was a kid. [The Harmony] was always pretty special, but then I took it on tour and it got a crack in the back. It's got one of those floating bridges and it just went out of tune halfway through every song. I started playing a bit harder and it just wasn't right. I keep it at home now and play it there.

Modified Maton EBG808 is Barnett's main acoustic guitar. It is modified and an one-off; Maton refers to it as "CB-808", although it's not an official signature model. As explained in 2021 Guitar World interview:

“They built it for me. So I think it’s my own little personal design,” says Barnett. “I just pointed at two guitars that were on the shelf and said, ‘Can I get something in the middle of this?’ It was mainly the [combination of the] color and the shape. Nothing too extreme.” A customized 808 – a shape unique to Maton that comes up a little smaller but much deeper than an OM – it has a triple-A spruce top with Blackwood back and sides, along with custom binding and rosette. It’s all finished in Vintage Amber Stain. “I love it,” says Barnett. “It's just so simple and sounds so beautiful.” Though it’s not available as a signature model, Maton tells us they refer to it as the ‘CB-808’.

In a 2022 interview with Guitar Player, Barnett mentions that her Maton 808 was used for "thickening up guitar parts" on 2021 album "Things That Take Time, Take Time".
