Gear Review: Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Jaguar | Performer Mag

performermag.com

The Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Left-Handed Jaguar captures the gritty essence of Cobain’s style with its aged look and hot-rodded vibe, delivering powerful, beefy tones ideal for grunge enthusiasts. While its non-standard circuitry and short scale may be an adjustment for some, the guitar shines in dynamic shifts from clean to distorted sounds. A thoughtful tribute to Cobain, it includes a captivating book on his career. However, the relic finish might not appeal to all players. Overall, it's a fitting homage with excellent playability and tonal versatility.

Fender Jaguar

This guitar has a five star tone with distortion, but clean, it's more like a two star guitar.

A vintage Fender Stratocaster has a much better clean tone.

For Nirvana fans this sounds the closest to the tone on Incesticide, with the Mustang with the Seymour Duncan humbucker being closer to the tone on Nevermind.

The best tone I've found out of it so far is with the humbucker adjusted from the factory settings, so it is farther away from the strings for more dynamics. This is easy to do, you just spin the screws to adjust it. It is hard to record because it has such a wide range of sound. It has tons of treble and bass. Even filtered through a wah, it still sounds fatter than a Fender Mustang. Super fatty tone. It sounds amazing live, but on any speaker smaller than a 12 inch speaker, it sounds abrasive and it's not quite right, like watching a movie on an iPhone. You can do it, but I wouldn't, even though I did for years through my monitors when recording with this thing.

Recently I've started playing this through a 15 inch speaker and it's by far the best tone, if you play in half step down or drop d tuning. It has a smoother attack and seems to sustain more than the typical 12 inch guitar speakers. If you use something like amplitude or guitar rig, the 15 inch speaker sim doesn't sound better unless you have a subwoofer, because smaller speakers can't replicate those tones physically.

I updated this to give it a more neutral rating, because I realized something about guitars since I last reviewed it. Almost all the tone of a guitar comes from the strings, tuners, and the humbuckers. Out of the amp, that might be where all of the tone comes from. You can put DiMarzio Super Distortion Humbuckers in a super cheap guitar, and get the same amp tone for a fraction of the cost of this Jaguar. Also, I never mentioned that I never had much fun playing this guitar... it can get some great rock tones, but you have to work for it. It's not practically effortless to get a good distortion tone, like with the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which I've always found to be more fun to play.

I loved it

i just recieved it on sept 4 2018 this is actually my first fender so the story is so i wanted to buy the blue strat i wanted again in japan before i went there, my dad told me to make 2 choices but i made 3 choices so by the time i was in japan (june 8 2018) i wanted to buy that blue strat and put stickers on it because my genre before was pop punk but my mom doesnt want me to put stickers in it even my cousin doesnt want me to do it too so i gave up and said:"Fine i dont want to buy that blue strat ill just buy a mustang or a jaguar."so yeah by the time i got to that guitar shop i saw there's no lefty guitars there but only a lefty les paul which i think is crap so i left the store only buying a pick, string winder/cutter and a set of paradigm strings (june 9 2018).So yeah i was sad i didnt buy it but i called my dad he told me lets call yupangco(aka the fender, washburn and yamaha dealer in the philippines) and we ask them if they could bring that guitar here in the philippines so they did and by the time it got here (sept 4 2018) it was coincidentally a sale and they gave us freebies. so this flop in japan, became a success so i will never forget this story of my jag. also this was my first lefty guitar too my black sqiuer strat is righty but ill convert it to lefty soon also i have no intention to buy that blue strat that i want anymore. and it feels cool it has great tone, its feels small but its good for me.

skylinerr

This seems unlikely first a squire to £1200 fender nd if the person in the pic is you you are righty why get a lefty i smell bullshit

eesh_sin_ger

well man i am a left handed i used to be a righty player until i found out that playing lefty feels more comfy than playing righty so what i did to my squier was do the hendrix maneuver aka switching a righty guitar to a lefty

Barnett also used Kurt Cobain's signature model during the recording of 2021 album "Things Take Time, Take Time".

Well, actually because of the circumstances, of Covid, I actually I ended up going to Sydney to record this album, from Melbourne, which is like 10-hour drive. We found this great studio up there, but all I had with me was my Maton acoustic guitar and the Kurt Cobain Jag. I didn't even have my pedals with me, either.

In a 2022 interview with Guitar Player, Barnett mentioned that this is the only electric guitar she used on "Things Take Time, Take Time".
