THE ALESIS HR-16...THIS IS THE DRUM MACHINE I USED AFTER THE SP-1200 DURING THE "Daily Operation" Recordings..."Ex Girl To Next Girl" WAS THE FIRST BEAT I EVER DID ON IT...."Take It Personal" WAS THE LAST BEAT I EVER DID ON THE SP.....THEN @eddiesancho SHOWED ME THE MPC-60 AND I WAS HOOKED ON MP's EVER SINCE.....MY ENGINEER @parksmusic JUST BOUGHT THAT OLD MACHINE TO THE STUDIO AND I THOUGHT I SAW A GHOST...1992 WAS THE LAST TIME I EVER SEEN ONE
In this interview, Dj Premier talks about gear, plugins and more, saying "Once I have done all the programming with the MPC60, I load everything into Pro Tools, and then I begin shaping the final sounds and track. When everything is printed in Pro Tools, I start experimenting with how to enhance it. I have a fully loaded HD Accel system, stocked with plug-ins. There are many plug-ins I haven't even experimented with yet. But I like the [Waves] Renaissance Vox and Bass plug-ins. I just play around until the sound has a nice shape. I can't just use mouse and keyboard when I work in Pro Tools, so I use the Control 24 board. I love that board, it's a beautiful thing. If I don't have buttons and faders, I lose interest."
In this video from Hip-Hop Wired, at :06s you can see the s950 in the background of Premier's studio. You can see it again in this YouTube video from AkaiProVideo.
Dj Premier talks about some of his gear in this interview with SOS, saying, "I may play on my M-Audio Oxygen 8 controller and use sound modules like the Emu Planet Phatt or Mo'Phatt. It is different every time, but today the majority of the time I'll get a drum pattern going, just a basic skeleton, and I then start to see if things fit."
“I got a chance to get tutelage from DJ Premier, have him try to teach me how to use the SP-1200, and show me how he scratches records, so the scenes of me doing DJ stuff didn’t look corny,”
Following the meeting with Large Professor in the late '80s that led Preem to switch to the Emu SP12, he also used an Alesis drum machine, and eventually settled on the Akai MPC60.
DJ Premier is associated with the Eventide H3000 Ultra Harmonizer Effects Processor, as listed in the equipment inventory of D&D Studios. This connection is detailed in the Gearslutz discussion titled "909 in Premier's studio?"
