Eric Judy's Gear
At the start of this video Eric is seen holding this bass, this seemed to be his main bass throughout the moon and antartica phase of modest mouse.
At 1:40 in this video, there is a clear shot of Eric Judy playing a Fender Precision Bass.
Judy can be seen with the Thunderchief in photos posted in an article by 904 Happy Hour. This bass does not appear to be an instrument that Judy uses regularly, but he has used it in the past.
Eric Judy played a 1987 Fender American Vintage Reissue Precision Bass in the first photos of Modest Mouse from '95 to about '99.
The tell of this is the odd placement of the Fender logo on his head stock, which is closer to the nut than any other AVRI 62 Reissue. The line of the lowercase "d" intersects with the string tree, rather than the standard logo placement which is on the right side of the string tree.
Eric Judy played a Hartke HA3500 combo in the first photos of Modest Mouse from '95 to about '99.
Throughout this video (good view at 43:02) Eric Judy plays a 70s Blonde Telecaster Bass. He played the Telecaster Bass live throughout 1999, but swapped to a Rickenbacker at some point towards the end of that year.
I'm pretty confident that used the Telecaster bass on The Moon and Antartica after I asked him! Not a direct confirmation, but he said he used "this sort of P Bass thing" for the earlier recordings.
In this video you can see Eric Judy playing a Hot Rod Red MIJ Jaguar Bass with a matching headstock. (You'll also hear a superior version of 'Pups To Dust')
Eric swapped his vintage P Bass out for the Jaguar sometime in 2011, his last year with the band.
