James Hetfield
James Hetfield's Studio Equipment
If you look at the rack closely you will see the noise gate says 1074 on it and on the left of it says dbx. This Picture can be found in an article that Mesa/Boogie released on their website, and if you search James' rack or gear on Google you can find it in Images.
Hetfield: We’re really pleased with Fractal. It’s amazing. For my rig, we went into the studio and put some sounds into it—a combination of my Mesa/Boogie amps mixed in with a little bit of my Diezel sound. The clean sounds are from the Roland JC-120. On stage, Mesa 2:Ninety power amps drive my cabinets, but those cabs aren’t miked at all. They’re only there for my monitoring, for getting feedback, and for just feeling it. The Fractal is going direct to the board.
According to fractal audio all live Metallica tones are made by using the Axe-fx III
In this video of James playing in his home music room you can see a Focusrite of some sort. I can't confirm whether it's the 18i8. But it clearly has 4 inputs in the front and 4 control knobs. It could also possibly be the Clarett 4-pre USB.
The AXE FX II is the second generation of the Fractal AXE FX amp modeling series. this is his live rig, and Kirk Hammett, the Rhythym Guitarist of Metallica also uses this specific model of AXE FX. James uses 3 in his rack, the first and third are the distortion settings and the second is for straight clean sounds. the James' rig can be seen at 2;07 on "Metallica: A Look at James & Kirk's Guitar Rigs" and Kirk's rig can be seen at 13;30 of that video. when james started using this specific model is unclear, but we do know that this is his been his main live rig for many years.
As recalled in the source article, this item is used by James Hetfield for modualtion effects.
