Joe Satriani's Ribbon Microphones
"The Trion 7000 makes my guitar sound huge. The full-bodied warm sound is great live or in the studio. The Trion 7000 has a dual ribbon elemtn for increased sensitivity. The Trion 7000 sounds fat. It has a thick, rich tone with a smooth top and it's chunky too! The frequency resp. is from 20 Hz -10k! It has a pronounced proximity effect too. That means that in close-up, it gives a good fattening effect. It's great for vocals, guitar, bass, piano, brass, woodwinds, acoustic bass, and more! It comes with an elastic shock mount and a metal travel case. It looks like a spaceship. CAD Professional Microphones sound great!"
In the YouTube video titled "Joe Satriani Trion 7000 Promo," Joe Satriani discusses his use of the CAD Trion 7000 Ribbon Microphone. He praises its ability to make his guitar sound "huge" and describes its full-bodied, warm sound as ideal for both live performances and studio recordings. Satriani highlights the microphone’s dual ribbon element, which enhances sensitivity, and appreciates its rich, smooth tone with a pronounced proximity effect, making it versatile for vocals, guitar, bass, piano, brass, woodwinds, and acoustic bass. The microphone also comes with an elastic shock mount and a metal travel case, adding to its appeal.
Used on the "Surfing to Shockwave" tour.
“When you’re doing [guitar-driven] instrumental rock, you’re looking to get a lot more frequencies out of the guitar because you have a lot more room to fill,” [FOH engineer Michael "Ace"] Baker notes, saying that he uses a 57 on Satriani’s amp “to make sure that everybody hears all the notes, [while] the Shure [KSM313/NE] ribbon mic gives me all the body and the warmth that I want to make it sound big and full. I try to make it sound for the audience like it sounds three feet away from the amplifier.”
